Sold 2020 Classic Balloon Tire Calendars

I'd be interested in purchasing one for 2021, even if it has the same photos as last year.

    Stamping Vinyl Seats

I did a Google search on oilcloth, and I found quite a bit of it for sale. I'd be just happy with pvc vinyl or whatever, though. You just want to use a quality material, and not the cheap crud I used on my office chair which dried up and cracked in a couple months of use.

    Stamping Vinyl Seats

    Interesting! Thanks for the information.

    Stamping Vinyl Seats

It looks like I'm going to have to draw a picture of what I want a stamp to look like, and send it to the stamp company in the post above to have one made. I guess if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.

    Stamping Vinyl Seats

Many, if not most of the old Troxel saddles from the 1930s-1950s were made of vinyl. However, it is the norm these days to recover them in leather. I personally avoid animal products and do not want leather. I have a 1940s Troxel saddle which was restored at one point, and a good job was done of...

Sold For Sale: Prewar Girls Troxel Saddle With Original Upholstery

I think it's from a 26" girls bicycle. The pan is 9" wide by 9" long.

Sold For Sale: Prewar Girls Troxel Saddle With Original Upholstery

This is a prewar Troxel girls saddle that's ready to install and use. It appears the upholstery was painted with black paint at some point. There is some rust, but fortunately there appears to be no noticeable pitting.

Sold For Sale: Troxel Nose Spring For 1940s & 1950s Boys & Girls Saddles

This is a nose spring that fits 1940s and 1950s boys and girls Troxel saddles. It was repainted and test-fit to a saddle, so some scratches. There appears to be no rust pitting, which is somewhat hard to find as they are the first part to get damaged by rust.

Sold For Sale: Prewar Lighted Carrier For Wards Hawthorne Bicycles

This is a lighted carrier that fits prewar Wards Hawthorne bicycles. This particular one is from a girls bicycle, presumably a Rollfast-built one. Might be able to be adapted to fit others. The lenses are missing, but at one point in the recent past someone on eBay was selling reproduction...

Sold For Sale: Prewar Boys Troxel Saddle With Good Original Upholstery

At one point I had this installed on a 1940s Hawthorne, and it fit and looked great.

Sold For Sale: Prewar Boys Troxel Saddle With Good Original Upholstery

This is a prewar Troxel boys saddle that's got great patina and is ready to install and use. It was taken apart and detailed without giving it an over-restored look. Rust was removed from the chrome springs, and the rest of the saddle had the rust chemically removed and then the parts painted...

Just Acquired A 2-Speed Columbia Sports Tourist Of Unknown Year

The Columbia now belongs to my roommate. Today I installed a wooden box on it that my roommate got at a swap meet. After straightening the carrier so it was flat, we got some hardware at Ace Hardware and then I put the box on with it.

    20" Schwinn Aerocycle--Your Thoughts?

    That's a nice one, indeed! I have a feeling $200 won't buy it, though.

    20" Schwinn Aerocycle--Your Thoughts?

I happened to run into the bicycle in person at a swap meet here. I still think it would be a nice display item if some parts were swapped out to make it look more authentic.

I Relocated And Bought Back My1940s Hawthorne Comet

Bicycle Heaven, thanks for the posts! I really hope to visit Pittsburgh and see my old bicycle one of these days. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures. About a year ago I was browsing your website and found my old Hawthorne, so I took a screenshot of it. I ended up working at a video rental...

Wanted: 1940s Troxel Seat Or Parts

For what it's worth, after years of searching, I just found a 2" long loop nose spring on a prewar lady's seat was the perfect size and it had no pitting. So, now I'll replace it with a smaller loop version and put it back up for sale.

    What's a restored 1941 Autocycle worth?

The bicycle butcher strikes again, eh? I refuse to buy anything from that seller.

    evaporust brush on

I'm interested in knowing as well. I saw a container of it at the auto parts store and thought it might be a less expensive solution than soaking an entire frame in a tub of the conventional Evaporust. Oxalic acid (wood bleach) works pretty well, but in my opinion Evaporust is a better product...

Is It Wrong to have tassels on a Dude's bike ?

Nice reflector on the carrier! I have not seen one like that before, but my carrier has a hole in that position. I wonder if that's original. I'll have to see if I can find one like that. The 27" wide version handlebars seem to be scarce and very expensive for some reason. It took me a long time...

Is It Wrong to have tassels on a Dude's bike ?

Great pictures! I saved them. I have a folder just for 1940s Hawthornes. It looks like you got some new carrier lights. I think your bike would greatly benefit from soaking in Evaporust--meaning I think there may be more paint under that rust than it appears. CABE member rustjunkie would do a...

Is It Wrong to have tassels on a Dude's bike ?

Oh! I forgot to mention that I had streamers on my first one. Weren't they pretty? I also thought that a large flagpole was in good taste at the time. And I was loving the combination of yellow oil house paint and red acrylic paint peeling off over rust... Live and learn--this was back in the...

    Bearing degreasing product suggestions.

I also use LA's Totally Awesome. It's comparable to Simple Green, but seems to work better and doesn't cause corrosion problems with metal. I prefer to start out with biodiesel and then use LA's Totally Awesome to clean off the biodiesel.

    Worksman Bikes

Arizona post offices use Worksman Low Gravity truck bicycles. I often see them strapped to the backs of postal vehicles. I used to make bulk package deliveries to the post offices at night, and you wouldn't believe the boneyards! Back in the 2000s I placed an order for a new Worksman bicycle...

Is It Wrong to have tassels on a Dude's bike ?

I really like your bicycle! I'm a big fan of the 1940s Hawthornes. Here is one I bought many years ago as a kid: After it was restored by the next owner: And here is one I bought after selling the last one, which I tracked down and bought back almost 20 years later:

    Bearing degreasing product suggestions.

I've found that biodiesel works fantastic at dissolving grease and it works better than anything I've ever used. Just be careful as it can melt some types of rubber. I run biodiesel in my car and buy it at a station, so sometimes I have a can filled up for parts cleaning use.

Just a quick before and after

Wow! It looks like a Flying Star I used to have.
  28. Squiggle Dog

    Wha do I have

Nice bike. I think the springer fork stop on the frame was a 1941-only feature. It looks like the handlebars, grips, brake lever, pedals, and tires were borrowed from a 1970s Schwinn Cruiser 5. I suspect it has also been repainted. Still, you have something special.

    WHAT THE HECK !!

It looks like it's bent at the seat tube now. I say bend it back, have it welded and let it live on for many more years.

    Western Auto Store

Really neat! My relatives owned a service station and Western Auto store years ago in Helper, Utah. It was abandoned for many years and now is being renovated as Helper is becoming a tourist town. My mother's family had lots of Western Flyer bicycles when they were kids. Here's the service...

    Vintage Bicycle Wall Calendars

Oh, neat. Maybe next year. In the meantime, I might end up making a calendar for myself.

Why even bother trying to sell?

I see so many Craigslist ads now with atrocious spelling and grammar. Oftentimes it will be long run-on sentences in all caps with no punctuation. I would be embarrassed for myself and my teachers if I wrote in such a manner! Then I'll see ads of cars, which contain about 6 blurry photographs of...

    Vintage Bicycle Wall Calendars

Is anyone selling current vintage bicycle wall calendars? I've searched for vintage bicycle calendars, and all the ones I see are of vintage road bikes, which aren't my thing. I'm more into balloon tire bicycles.

    schwinn black phantom tank repo's

I bought one of the reproduction tanks years ago, and it came in a special box. It had vinyl graphics on it and the metal was very thin. They put the vinyl piping on the edges because otherwise you'd slice your fingers on them! Later I got a better reproduction (the ones they actually put on the...

Dangerous Pedals how did they do it?

I always wore loafers when I was a kid in the 1990s (after they were WELL out of style--one time I accidentally wore my gym shoes to class and a girl next to me told me with wide eyes, "Welcome to the '90s!" But, I don't recall slipping off the pedals of the 1930s-1960s bicycles that I rode (I...

The New President Of The LDS Church Has A Vintage Bicycle Collection

Interesting. Numerous articles, including Wikipedia, state that Russell M. Nelson was the first person to perform a successful open-heart surgery on a human being, in 1951 (however, his first attempt was done in 1951, and the first success was in 1955). Before then, the heart-lung bypass machine...

The New President Of The LDS Church Has A Vintage Bicycle Collection

I just found something really neat--an article which mentions what I assume is the Iver-Johnson bicycle: I also found a picture of him on a tricycle: I forgot to mention that he had a really neat kids tricycle at his summer home, but it's not the one in the picture--it had large wheels and a...

    ID this please!

I really like how a previous owner wanted hub reflectors badly enough that he cut a hole in one so it would work with the 3-speed. I might use that idea with my 2-speed New Departure DD hub on my Hawthorne.

The New President Of The LDS Church Has A Vintage Bicycle Collection

With 116 grandchildren, I find it unlikely, but it was a fun experience, anyway--and really neat to see the bicycles being enjoyed by younger generations rather than gathering dust. There was another local gentleman who had a Schwinn Cycletruck that he used to ride around. One day I asked him if...

The New President Of The LDS Church Has A Vintage Bicycle Collection

The LDS Church has a new prophet--Russell M. Nelson, a 93-year-old former heart surgeon who helped develop the artificial lung and performed the first successful open-heart surgery. 20 years ago when I was a child, I met him as he had a summer home on the street behind our house in Midway, Utah...

    What is this bike??

To me, it looks like a 1940s wartime Schwinn lightweight which had wider fenders installed later on, and then some mountain bike parts added.

Miss Gulch, Wizard of Oz Bike?

The guy who owned that bicycle used to own the bicycle shop which I later managed. He also owned the tandem from The Sound of Music. He gave me my first Hi-Lo take apart bicycle, which he saved from the dumpster.

Does anybody know if these bikes are worth anything

Hi! I'm Scott, 33, from Surprise, Arizona, USA. I'm into balloon-tire bicycles. I am a truck driver by profession and my favorite food is curry. Also, I'm an Aquarius sign. Now that that is out of the way, welcome to The CABE! My opinion is that I don't think your bicycles have much monetary...

STOLEN TRAILER,,,all my parts.. and bikes

Yes, I definitely recommend a surveillance system. I am trying to get my roommate on-board with that once we have the money to do so. Recently someone threw a rock and smashed out the back window of my roommate's 1965 Ford Country Sedan which was parked in the driveway.

    Auction Finds

Does that Wasp have original paint, though? The pinstriping on the front fender by the scallop seems really crooked. Great finds, though! One day I want a Wasp like that to replace my Cruiser 3.

I Am A Vintage Bicycle Expert! And Yet I Don't Know Who Built My Own Mother's Bicycle. :(

GTs58--thanks for the ad! The pic of the girl's bike looks very similar to my mom's. Now we are throwing another possible brand into the mix--Kent. I wonder if Kent was another reseller like Scheuer, where they didn't actually make the bicycle, but contracted it out to another company, possibly...
