OA, must start out with high quality part like the others say. Crust means the finish is long gone, it’s not going to look good, save yourself the trouble.
It could also be a cracked bearing cup or a worn cone, the crank cones should not have a big groove or pitting from wear. Sometimes the cones have uneven wear

Yeah the restored bikes are purdy. Even with the OG riders it takes a lil’ bit of time to get them dialed in. I don’t know what to say when people ask me if I’m going to restore my bike, I’m too lazy to convince them, but the restored ones look great too.

Yeah I know, I had a restored bike once and I rode it. One day the wind knocked it over and it got all scratched up. That happened a few days after I put it together
I like to ride my bikes. I’ve been thinking more and more of buying restored bicycles. I’m just afraid of the paint chipping, especially around the fender rivets. What say you?
