I bought a Twinn for $75 and rode it home by myself. My wife took one ride and nixed it. I got a neighbor kid to ride it with me. A stout young lad and we tore up the neighborhood with it one summer. Sold it for $150.
I stopped by a friends place and found him out in his barn. I’ve known him quite a while but had never been in his barn. Started wandering around in there and found this. I told him to get it out and clean it up! He said Nah. He likes it like that. I couldn’t believe it. He just had his ‘69 Z-28...
I worked in a factory that made compressors. About the last thing before they went in boxes and on pallets was the serial number plate. One guy did that job all the time and he kept things straight. When he went on vacation for 2 weeks, others did the job. The numbering invariably got all messed...
Just to add to the confusion, this is another I frame I still have.
The frame was damaged and rewelded at some point. I ground down the welds and would have built this frame a long time ago but a tank won’t fit because of the welds. No idea on the date of this one.
This is an I serial number DX. It has a 16” frame and was too small to ride. I’m 6’ 2”. You can see that the rack is for an 18” inch frame as it don’t sit level. I could never find the correct rack. I sold this bike 15 yrs ago.
That painted wing guard was first used on DXs in ‘41 as were the grips. I once owned a DX with an I serial number and thought that was a ‘42 number. With a prewar K serial number and a ‘43 crank date, could this be a ‘43 ballooner? I thought only lightweight bikes were made during the war?
Speedway and American Flyer were both names used by Louisville Cycle Supply. This business was owned by Zeldon Lipski and family. I have two prewar Speedways and have both of them going now. I have an extra down tube Speedway decal if you need one.
I had a Black Deluxe Typhoon I delivered papers on from ‘68-‘70. I bought it used but like new so it was maybe a ‘67-‘68?? It had a yellow band 2-speed and chrome rims and fenders. It also had a mouse trap carrier on the front that was a big help with the paper bag. It also had non original...
It’s how language evolves. To many people, “Schwinn” has become synonymous with bicycle. Another example is the common “styrofoam” cup. Only DuPont Company makes styrofoam. A trademarked name. All other brands can only use “expanded foam”. Try telling someone they are not holding a “styrofoam...
I have a pair of unfinished walnut grips. These were made by a member of the Rat Rod Forum. I think he was from SD. I had him make 2 pairs and I finished one pair with antique gunstock stain then Tru-oil. The finished grip is not for sale. The unfinished grips are the same wood from the same...
Here’s a pic of the auto-lathes at Schwinn. Often called “screw machines” or “bar stock machines” or just “automatics”. These are all multi-spindle machines and are complicated to set up and run. I worked in a machine shop for many yrs and ran single spindle Brown & Sharpe screw machines. The...
Schwinn made all their turned parts on Conomatic auto-lathes they purchased right before WW2. Very easy to make proprietary threads with these machines. Try finding a cross bolt for a pre-55 spring fork. Even the best industrial bolt supplier won’t have them. The first six Conomatics built went...
I bought a mint Schwinn American from the original owner. When he purchased it he also bought this kickback laced to a brand new S-7 from the Schwinn dealer. He never used it. When I serviced it I could tell it was like new. This is about as close to NOS that you can get. 18T, serviced with...
I had a good idea for a chain guard but it’s just not working out. I had a Schwinn deluxe guard that was badly damaged. I cut off back end and just saved the “wing”. I tried to use a bracket from another guard to try to attach it to my prewar Schwinn frame. I managed to scratch my frame and just...
This generic rack had spring loaded bails to secure your load. Spring underneath rack and held by pins that went in 4 tabs with holes. I decided not to use spring things so I put reflectors in the tabs.
The fork don’t match the frame. Pin stripes not right. Should be 3 color diamond. Frame and tank are deluxe B model and should have fender light front fender. Rear fender braces wrong and might be prewar fender. Rack is aftermarket. Wrong chain guard. Seat is wrong.
Two very nice Admiral badges. One has been slightly polished and has nice cameo. The other is untouched with original brass dark patina. Shipped in small flat rate box.
Monark rocket that was ripped from rivets. Might be usable, not sure. It looks like Siegel Airman badge is 1 1/2” measured across the face. Shipped in small flat rate box.
These badges have 2 3/16 hole spacing. The Royal is one of my first attempts at badge painting. Badge has some cracks around screw holes. The Ace is in perfect shape and has been polished. Shipped in small flat rate box.
NOS badge. Never been on a bike. When I got it, a tiny amount of “black” was missing from the letters and you could see clear through where it was missing. I took a sharpie and filled in missing black and fixed it. You can see on back where I touched it up. Front looks perfect now. Shipped in...
