What bike did you ride today?

Temporarily traded some track parts out on the 67 Paramount so I can ride the local bike trail this week. Just a few laps around the neighborhood for now. Some beautiful bikes and scenery in this thread.

What bike did you work on today?

Swapped fixed-pista wheelset and pedals, raised stem a bit for some back relief for a trail ride. Spare wheelset is a Velosteel coaster rear and rebuilt Harden up front with some TB14s. MKS Sylvan Touring Pedals temporarily replaced the Campy track pedals.

Help date a crusty Chrome Paramount

So sometime in 1939, maybe towards the end of the year or it may been 1940-41 they transitioned to the squarish cut out. I see on the serial list A685 is the first bike to have a square cut out and is listed as 1939+. Looks like P serials start post war 1947. I’m thinking my A702 is a 1940-41.

Help date a crusty Chrome Paramount

My chrome, repaired and re-stamped Paramount, very similar to the OP’s bicycle.

Help date a crusty Chrome Paramount

The photos I uploaded were ones I saved years ago, I found the website again here is the link. fixedgeargallery On the page they are calling the blue bike a 1937, it’s definitely an early bike. A702 Purchased from Jeff Groman, according to the serial list a 1939… That is 445 buried behind it.

Help date a crusty Chrome Paramount

It could very well be a 38-39, all the Paramounts from this era are very similar with the exception of head tube cutout and the caps on the seat tube stays. Like anything else the devil is in the details, the bike above is one of the very first Paramounts, it has a round head tube cutout.

Help date a crusty Chrome Paramount

Well you can know within a decade, that’s pretty much true for this type of bike from this era. The Waterford website production estimates for Paramounts 1938-1958 was 1900 bikes, that’s not a lot of bikes over 20 years. An estimated 900 of those bikes were built between 1938 and 1941 the rest...

Help date a crusty Chrome Paramount

Trainman999 had it right, you can’t get an exact date without a serial but you can get close. I have one exactly like yours, ball end seat stays, squarish head tube cutout, chrome finish, no serial on frame or fork. I’m not saying this is the case with our particular bikes, but I found this...

Circa early 1930's Stayer. Owned by Lou Maltese.

I should have known better, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I may have seen that bike on your website years ago and it slipped my mind. As a matter of fact I see many of your bikes pop up here and there in various collections. It reminds me of how small of a group source these bikes as I...

Circa early 1930's Stayer. Owned by Lou Maltese.

I saw this on another site and remembered this thread, there are some similarities. Louis Maltese’s 1928 Bastide Stayer

It this a real wastyn track bike?

Here are a few other builders that use similar cutouts. Brambilla that someone thought might be an old Paramount. Goossens, a one time Wastyn apprentice. Wastyn
  12. St33lWh33ls

It this a real wastyn track bike?

Here are some other photos to maybe help sort this out. This is the frame, head tube they were using for the Dürkopp connection, yes it has windowed cutouts, but not remotely close to your bike.
  13. St33lWh33ls

It this a real wastyn track bike?

Not that it matters because it’s a super cool bike whatever it is, but it’s most likely not a Brennan. It’s a dead ringer to Ed William’s 1930′s Wastyn bicycle on the Classic Cycle website with the exception of the forward facing dropouts. The pencil shaped ends on the seat and chain stays where...

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

Wow, that’s pretty. Thanks for the close up of the seat stay cluster, the open stay doesn’t look like it was pinned. Wastyn used a pin to hold the stay in place during the build. I have seen an early Paramount with open stays, wondering if they were pinned as well, anybody?
  18. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

You have a fantastic collection, plus we both were smart enough to purchase Pop Brennans from Edward Albert. ;)
  19. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

Just wanted to say this bike has a real Lance Claudel vibe to it, take a look at this bike on the Classic Cycles website and see what you think. Love the color of your bike, very classy. Does it have a slight green tint or is that just tint reflections in the photo...
  20. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

Caber kccomet owns this bike and had a post full of photos I was looking for, it was a good resource, but it seems to be gone now. This bike was listed on EBay at one time and I saved all those photos as well, I need to go through my PC and find them.
  21. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

Most frame builders of this era stick to a pattern, Pop Brennan, Willy Appelhans, Lance Claudel, Joe Kopsky, Louis Goossens, and other six day builders designs were fairly consistent, not so much with the Wastyns. First you have to decide which Wastyn and then check out the myriad of designs...
  22. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

The Goossens bikes I have seen all have the same head tube cutouts. Wastyn, Pop Brennan and others also used this configuration, but I have only seen this type cutout on all Goossens bikes. If someone has a Goossens with a different head tube cutout I would love to see it.
  23. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

Nope, no holes. Guess I need to clarify, I believe with about 90% certainty that the bike is a Wastyn. As I told the original Caber that messaged me I spent a considerable amount of time researching and comparing to other bikes of this type-era. Afterward, when I was reasonably sure what the...
  24. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

LOL, Private message thought it was possible the bike was a Goossens, you know, like the one you have with the jerseys and spare wheels. I searched for the post you had from long ago but couldn’t find it.
  25. St33lWh33ls

    Wastyn late 20’s early 30’s

I had some questions about this bike maybe being a Goossens rather than a Wastyn so I’m posting a few photos for comparison. If you have a Goossens please post a few photos.

    Alvin Drysdale Red Devil

I don’t know if this a White Flyer or not, but it is one of his upper level bikes. Lugs look similar to a Red Devil, Chater Lea chainset, block chain, adjustable track stem, looks like low flange Airlite hubs, a real racer with known provenance. If I had room for one more bike…...

Sold Prewar 1930's Circa Drysdale ACE ? Men's Track Bike, Repaint with no badging

The bike is most likely a Drysdale, probably an Ace model. It could also be an Alvin model, the fork ends on the Alvin were pressed flat instead of brazed on. The Alvin was an entry level bicycle, the Ace an entry level racer, it used lighter tubing but the lugs were not as ornate as the top of...

    SCHWINN TRACK BIKE?

Lugs are similar to this Wastyn, especially head cutout and fork crown. http://classiccycleus.com/home/1930s-oscar-wastyn-special/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=1930s-oscar-wastyn-special Looks like 50’s FB hubs https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/208123/ Best guess 50’s Wastyn

Looking for information on 1938 Schwinn Paramount Team Bikes

It’s accurate to the extent that there are bikes listed with known provenance, from the known bikes you can extrapolate the date of other bikes by their serial numbers position to the known bikes. Is it 100%, probably not, but it’s as close as you are going to get as the original records were...

Looking for information on 1938 Schwinn Paramount Team Bikes

Nice bike! Anywhere from 48 to early 50’s would be a good guess based on serials of known bikes from that period. If it was a 47 it would most likely have a p*** serial, this is just my opinion mind you. My thinking is that they would not have changed serial naming convention mid year, but...

Help I’d this bike and value

What’s the serial number under the bottom bracket?
  33. St33lWh33ls

    Chrome Paramount

I think @GTs58 was on to something, maybe restamped at the time of repair. The serial is upside down compared to other Paramounts and in a different location. I don’t know if the”X” is covering part of the old number or has some other designation-meaning.
  34. St33lWh33ls

    Chrome Paramount

I have emailed Scott Wastyn in the past about another bicycle, he replied that the serials on their bicycles were at the customer’s request and could be anything they wanted. This was great for recording a single bike to an owner, not so great for reference. This bike has moved around, it was...

    Rat Trap pedals

From the Speedplay Pedal Museum Torrington 4-Star 1935 USA 4-Star pedals were said to have come stock on early Schwinn Paramounts. The retail price of a new set was $3.70 in the 1940's.

    1941-42 Schwinn New World

Nice work, love the color combination, something cool about vintage paint with some patina.
  37. St33lWh33ls

    Chrome Paramount

You call that one Mustang don’t you.;) Yep can’t forget the P’s, mostly 40’s I believe, round, flat or open seat stays?
  38. St33lWh33ls

    Schwinn Paramount 1939

How did I miss this? I love this bike more every time I see it. I believe those are the low flange Dural hubs that came standard on the Superior track model. The cool thing about them is they will take most track cogs, the Paramount hubs will not, different threading.
  39. St33lWh33ls

    Chrome Paramount

Not sure, the serial doesn’t follow the usual three digit or A+ three digit Paramount sequence. If I had to guess I would say 38-40 is possible, the ball end seat stays are typical on early bikes. This bike was rode hard and put up wet, it’s been crashed and repaired. I bought it for parts for...

    1939 Schwinn Paramount

Thank you, that helps immensely, I have Paramount that doesn’t follow the typical serial number regime and the seat post size 26.2. My 1939 and 1951 are 27 and 27.2 respectively and have different seat tube lugs.

Beautiful Paramount. What is the seat post size, do you have a close up of the seat post lug?

    Chainwheel Rubbing

I am not familiar with this crankset, typically when you see a nut and bolt setup on this vintage it means stripped holes so a fix was to add nuts and washers, or that could be the setup, I don’t know. You can pull the drive side cotter and slide the crank outboard until it aligns with the...

Did you service- rebuild the bottom bracket? Spindle in reversed? Is the drive side crank positioned correctly, I think I see some extra spindle exposed.
