What bike did you ride today?

My first road bike was a 531 Raleigh too, back in 1982. Very sweet frames to ride. I can't do too many miles on this type of bike either, but it's fun while it lasts! Keep on riding!

What bike did you ride today?

It certainly is, plus NOS Brooks saddle, Williams cranks, inch pitch chainring, Milremo rims, Campagnolo track hubs, an unknown French stem, period track bars and chain. Non NOS parts are the GB brake lever and Weinman brake caliper. The pedals and wire toe cages are new, from MKS Japan. She's...

What bike did you ride today?

Finally had a dry, sunny day when I felt like riding my latest 'fixie' out on the road. Most of you will recognise this as being way shinier than most of my other bikes. It's a 1955 'Maclean' Track model frameset, built up with NOS and some newer components..... ...the frameset was...

    Brake Cable Routing?

Many of my friends consider me dangerous, a few of my fixies have no brakes either, lol.

    Brake Cable Routing?

This is the reason why, on vintage British clubmans racing bikes, that are often fixed gear with a front brake only, the front brake lever is always mounted on the left, so you may use the brake whilst turning right (we crazy people still drive on the left side, as you are aware). It's a safety...

    Milano San …

First 'Monument' of the season, always a classic (although I would argue for the inclusion of 'Strade Bianche' to become a new 'Monument' one day, give it another 83 years perhaps). Looking forward to a great season of road racing ahead, and the Olympics too. Some of us love it!

With sadness I announce the loss of another CABER , Ian Laurie @Ian

Such sad news, Ian's posts and photos were always a pleasure to see from faraway, across the pond. You could sense the joy he found in riding those lovely machines in that beautiful part of the world. And those little comments of greeting in response to mine and other's posts always made me...

    Identified Fender caps

Not exactly sure of the maker, so many manufacturers of British roadsters used them. They look like the Raleigh version, but I couldn't say for certain. They're useful as a rough guide to dating a bicycle, when so many of these roadster style bicycles didn't change much stylistically over...

What bike did you ride today?

Just a short, 8 mile, ride this morning. I fitted a 1930's 'Super Champion' 3-speed 'derailleur' gear on the Ciclos Minaco II earlier in the day. I had been waiting for a friend to find one of his NOS spoke guards for it and he came up with the goods yesterday. Pictured in...

    1920s Umberto Dei stayer

There were a few branded offerings of saddle supports for track racing in the UK available. I've seen 50's/60's examples offered for sale. I've recently been offered an 80's example, but it is just frameset, headset, bottom bracket and seatpost.

1886 L.A.W. Canton Ohio City Hall Photo 23"

You usually find riders of those 'high-wheelers' are very adept and practiced at dismounting, typically using the mounting technique (via the step) in reverse; although I have seen people dismount (intentionally) forwards, over the handlebars, but they're just showing off! We don't have races...

    1920s Umberto Dei stayer

Thanks for the information. Practically every 'vintage' stayer I have seen has had an 'Aquila' saddle fitted. They also seem to have been recycled/reused over the years, I have a friend who has a couple of 1980's Spanish bikes fitted with what look like earlier saddles. Do you know how long...

Late `20`s English three speed test ride (very bad) and build (a lot better)...

The V-CC have two catalogues available to view to members, 1932 and 1938. In both of these publications all frames are built of 'Reynolds' tubes; either "A" butted, "HM" (High Manganese) or "531"". Hi, and welcome to The Cabe. While there was an early cycle manufacturer in England called 'Invicta', I don't think that is what you've been given. I believe the bicycle you have is of Dutch origin, from The Netherlands. 'Invicta' was a sub-brand sold by the Gazelle company over there. The...
