Finally had a little time (VERY little) to devote to this. Really, all I did was replace the tires with slightly less crusty ones, do a couple of patchwork fender brace repairs, move the seat and handlebars, and wipe it all down. Because it all needs to be blown apart and greased, I didn’t ride...
Was gifted this from a coworker who didn't want to see it go to scrap. The plan for now is just to make it a rusty rider. Serial number makes it a 1951, which would be my oldest Schwinn.
The gent who gave it to me has lots of memories of it, like delivering newspapers on it...
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! And yes, my plan is to see if a little tinkering/adjustment will get it working without a complete teardown. The plan is to ride it on occasion; we do a Thursday evening group ride spring through fall and this one will be added to the rotation.
Picked up this nice '60 Corvette, looks like it will go great with the '59 3-speed I found last year.
The 2-speed hub seems to be out of adjustment. If I pedal it on the stand, the wheel runs in low gear with the lever AWAY from the bars. When I click the lever TOWARDS the...
Congrats on a killer find. I have only ever seen these at Bicycle Heaven in Pittsburgh, where there are several on display (as others have mentioned). Looking forward to seeing it come together.
That bike is GREAT! Wish my original seat and sprocket cap looked that good! And that speedometer is amazing too. Very cool!
I'm just starting to learn about the Spaceliner-styled bikes as I fix up this one. As far as I know, Murray produced bikes with this frame style for Sears, Western...
Moved up to crusty rider status. Changed out the bars for some slightly wild ones, updated the guard graphic. Looking for a Troxel seat that's closer to what would have been on there and maybe some pedals that look old enough.
Picked this up in February, just finally getting around to tearing it apart now.
As found:
Just tore it all apart and dunked everything chrome (except the wheels) in an OA bath. We'll see how well it all cleans up...
Recent acquisition. Brings me back... I never had a nice BMX bike as a kid in the early '80s, but all my friends did. Redline, Mongoose, Hutch, PK Ripper, Diamondback, while I made do with a department store Huffy spray bombed flat black. My little brother had an '83 Predator that he changed out...
1951 J.C. Higgins
Picking away at little stuff the last few days.Today I faked a graphic on the guard; it was bugging me that it didn't have the white stripe and there was no name on it
My first REAL tank bike/ballooner (not counting a few '60s Schwinn Slimlines), a 1951 J.C. Higgins. Fenders, rack, and seat were stuff I had around and are subject to change or removal.
This is what it looked like when I got it.
Most of my bikes are from the '60s and '70s; this is my first tank bike and my first ballooner. Can someone direct me to a J.C. Higgins serial number decoder or help with a date and maybe a model on this one?
The friend who sold it to me found this image online if it helps; it sure...
I've always been a fan of these, probably in part because as a little kid, I frequently heard Bob McAllister's voice on the TV show Wonderama announcing the "Ross Apollo 3-Speed" as a prize for lucky members of the studio audience. It also helps that when I was in elementary school, a kid on the...
A friend's dad is cleaning out the garage to sell his house. The friend showed me pics of a bunch of bikes and asked if they were worth anything. I asked them to put this one aside for me.
Fork crown, frame design, head tube/headbadge holes, sprocket, and serial all suggest Ross built...
Thanks! I knew you'd be the one to ask about year-to-year details like that. I think I may be able to scrounge up the fender and kickstand, but I'm sure the console will be tough to find. I may be asking you about that eventually.
Picked this up at the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Flea Market on Thursday. I have always liked Apollos, and the price was right on this one. Wheels are straight, brakes and gears work, freewheel sounds good, seat is in amazingly good shape. Missing shift console trim, front fender, and...
Heh heh heh full disclosure about that Scrambler decal... it wasn't on there when I got it. It's actually not even really a decal; I made a stencil and sponge-painted it on. I am fairly sure, though, that when my bike was new it had that type decal in that spot.
Interesting that yours has a...
As I understand it, in the early 1980s Schwinn transferred their production to Giant in Japan to cut costs and sell bikes at prices competitive with other manufacturers. But that's just what I got from the Wikipedia article.
If it's originally black and yellow, and has a 1981 serial number, it...
my 24" Speedster that I morphed into a cheap imitation wannabe Manta Ray
we actually had a very nice little New Year's Day ride... it was in the mid 50s in Western Maryland, so we rode across town to eat at the Blue Moon Cafe.
Just now looking at the pictures it occurred to me that we had...
just picked this up off Craigslist. based on the little bit of research I did, this was built by Giant for Schwinn. maybe that's why the welds are so ugly. :D the plan is to build it up with stuff I have around and enjoy beating the snot out of it like I'm 12 again.
I had some...
I just got one kind of similar to that from Fleabay. I didn't realize the top was folded down 90° until it actually got here. Now, mine is different because it's not an axle mount. I do believe that the comment above about BMX bikes is correct. Right in this thread here on the CABE is a late 70s...
I've been riding with a group that has some original Fastbacks and Manta-Rays, and I decided to build my own Manta on a budget. I found this 24" Speedster on Craigslist:
Since it's a fairly nice complete bike, I am only making changes that can be easily reversed by parts swapping. I am...
thanks all! pulled the rack and speedo for now... replaced the front rim strip and shot some air in the tires, it took me around the block no problem. will take your advice on some GENTLE cleanup... this will make a good winter project.
recent find that a friend saw on Facebook and sent me the link. as found condition, will post cleanup pics as I get to it...
this guard scares the crap out of me. any tips on cleaning it without rubbing off the lettering?
rack is pretty badly wonked, don't know if it'll straighten...
Dawes, wow. Haven't seen one of them in ages. Bike store near me sold them when I was in high school in the '80s. At one point I wanted a Dawes Echelon in the worst way. At the time I was looking, their bikes had these cool fade paint jobs. I remember a dark blue to light blue and a root...
Yeah, about the plating... I've been spending a lot of time lately fixing up '60s and '70s Schwinns, and it's VERY obvious on this bike that some of the plating has not held up well compared to them. I don't know how these bars and stem will clean up, but I'm not real hopeful looking at them...
I actually thought that... but none of the "upgrades" (lol) are on this bike. Also, on my old one, I actually painted my name on the top tube just under the seat in gold Testors model paint to match the trim in the frame lugs. You better believe that's the first thing I looked for when I saw...
A little reluctant to post this one, because it's a cheap entry-level 10-speed from the early '80s... but it was special to me, so a little background first.
My dad was an accountant. He used to do taxes on the side for small businesses. One of his customers was a surf shop near New York City...
'67 Fleet 24" at the Simple Transport Aircooled VW and Bike Show in Hagerstown, MD
lots of cool stuff at this show, actually...
this one showed up late and knocked everyone's socks off
these were pretty amazing, but I didn't get pics of them... had to...
Guard, fork crown, sprocket... I'd say Ross. The one in my pictures is mid '60s
(sorry for the potato pics... the light in the bike dungeon is pretty bad)
