1963 Schwinn Traveler with 3 speed Sturmey Archer rear hub with stainless steel fenders and front and rear Weinman caliper brakes. Includes Miller generator front and rear light, and Schwinn Saddle bag. These are accessories that originally came with the Traveler. In the 1960s, the Traveler was...

Schwinn 5-Speed Apple Krate Stingray bicycle. Serial number on rear dropout dates the frame to April 1970, crank is dated SA1269 (December 1969). I purchased this from the son of the original owner. His father and he rode this bike as a kids.
Condition: all original parts/paint: frame...
Yup, we collectors/enthusiasts know what great, high quality bikes these are. BUT, the general public thinks buying a new bike from a big box store at the same (or higher) price is better because it's "new"! Bikes have come to be seen as disposable items to the general public. "Buy it new...
Agree, and I try to write my CL posts to emphasize the quality of these vs. a modern imported bike, but even with that I get almost no interest when I sell a 60s/70s Schwinn lightweight. Women's frames are far worse. No matter what it is, you can't get more than $100 for a '60s/70s women's...
Listed locally on CL for local pickup. $145 OBO. Now with correct black/white Schwinn "S" seat and handlebar grips.

Question, I've noticed the front atom drum brake does not "grab"as much as I think it should. I tightened the cable with the lever in "rest" position to a point just before the brake shoe starts to grab the drum. However, when I compress the brake lever all the way, there is no where near the...
RARE Miller dual headlight bicycle light generator set from 1962. Genuine Miller dual or double headlight set including dynamo generator and taillight. Generator marked "MADE iN ENGLAND 6 VOLTS-3.3 WATT H MILLER R & Co Ltd". Tab on generator bracket marked "MADE IN GT BRITAIN 53-8P" Date...
Kudos to GT! Stripped off my paint job. Acetone worked well and very fast to strip off the paint. Masked the guard again and then followed your instructions with VHT flat aluminum base then the metalcast. Excellent results IMHO for paint match in both full sun and shade. Will wait until...
By the way, here's a shot of the bike in full sun. You can see the difference in the chain guard color. I thought maybe I had put one coat too many on?
Thanks, GT. I did not clue in that the base coat over chrome needs to be silver. Makes sense because it would match the bike frame base coat. If I do strip the chain guard, what solvent would work best?
Used Dupli-Color metalcast red with Dupli-Color adhesion promoter to pain the chain guard. I think it turned out decent. The match looks better in the shade than bright sunlight. One week for full cure of the paint according to the can, so will put the decal from bicycle bones on next...
Glad it looks like you are going to sell it. I was tempted as we are traveling to Appleton next weekend, but I really don't need another bike in the garage!
Thanks guys, it's really sad these don't get more appreciation by the general public. People will spend that amount on a "new" bike from a big box store, but they won't even think about a quality fully serviced older bike like this.
The bike is actually a 1970, DF serial number, but has the late 1969 shifter. Everything cleaned up pretty nice. The chrome cleaned up nicely. Bought a 1998/99 Schwinn repro seat/hardware and repro pogo sissy bar. Front brake cable is too short. Must have been replaced at some point. I...
Yes, I had seen the Koolest Stuff site, but the chain guard needs to be painted before silk screening. So, the question is more about painting the guard. Do people just DIY? I also saw Koolest Stuff has Famboyant Red paint, so that would be an option. Not sure how good I would be at masking...
I picked up this '69 (I think) Apple Krate a couple of days ago.
Here is a closeup of the chain guard. As you can see there is no paint left on the guard. What do people advise to do in this situation? Can the guard be properly painted and re-silk screened or decaled? Is there someone or...
Wow, that is a beautiful bike, Bob!
Here's a pair of Americans I had. Moved the front brake from the woman's frame to the men's and sold the woman's frame bike. Green is '55 and blue is '56. Still have the men's but don't ride it much, though I do really like the Bendix manual 2 speed hub.
Here's an article from the New York Times about Giant and the current bike shortage. Schwinn actually gets a mention in the article! Interesting read on the current bike shortage...
Interesting, Walmart gets to sell Phantoms and Amazon gets to sell Krates. I know which one I'd rather be selling...
And the Schwinn dealer network gets??
Just looked at e-bay prices on parts. Yikes, correct repro fenders and tank would be around $500 - and then you’d still have to paint the tank correctly, add decals, paint the front light... next is chair guard, rear rack, light, etc. etc. :(
I agree if you can find them and afford them. Seems I'm always reading how vintage bikes such as Phantoms are "out there," but I don't seem to see them. What am I missing? Where is everyone seeing these 50's heavyweights for $500 - $1200? Not trying to be critical, but sometimes I think it...
Thanks for the comments. I doubt I would do a full restore on this. I'd put a chain on, and look for a guard and probably repro or generic chrome heavyweight fenders. I don't currently have a springer fork bike. I had a '58 Deluxe Hornet for a while, but sold that. I always found it fun to...
Opinions on this Phantom as a project?? These are the only pictures I have. Best I can make out serial number is C54102, but hard to tell from the picture. Opinions on value as is?
I think $995 is a stretch for that bike. "Made in USA" is only going to go so far to get people to buy a bike. I agree if they could have made something closer to the original with lots of CHROME, that would get people's attention. It's why the imported current production Sting Rays and...
I'm reading this thread with interest, as there is a burgandy Cruiser Deluxe for sale locally for $200. Seller started at $300 for each bike in the picture, but now is down to $200 each. I just can't seem to get the interest to go see it (have no interest in the woman's bike). Probably same...
Beautiful survivor. I had one of those once, it was my Uncle's childhood bike, and I got it when I was about 12 or 14. It had been kept in the shed on the farm and got fairly rusty. I did my best to restore it when I was in my mid-20s, then sold it. Wish I had kept it now, but that was a...
This bike raises a good question, what IS Pacific Cycle/Dorel Industries doing for the 125th Anniversary of the Schwinn brand? I can’t imagine this bike is it, or the couple of Schwinn Stingrays they’re selling at Walmart. Did I miss the anniversary merchandise?
I would tend to agree that looks fairly fixable at a good LBS. A full service shop will have done this many times.
It’s your bike, but it’s in such nice shape, it would be a shame just to part it out. Pretty common for the lights and reflectors to be missing on bikes this old.
All finished and put back together. The wax certainly shined up the paint. Might be a bit darker color than before, but not as deep as the original Spitfire Red.
I’ll probably take this one out on a few rides to see how it handles. Great example of a mid-50s lightweight.
Yes, I think Coppertone is one of the (if not THE) quintessential Schwinn colors. I don't think I've seen that color on any other manufacturer's bikes.
