    More Spring Cleaning

The Roman statesman/soldier Cato the Elder/Censor would often end his speeches by saying "Delenda est Carthago"-"Carthage must be destroyed !"

how many Cabers have ridden 100 miles on a bike all at once?

Only once on my trusty old 1978 Schwinn Superior. Set off on a pleasant September afternoon, realized I had gone 65 miles and it was nothing, so I went for 100. Did 112, got back at 2AM. My Superior has a Union generator set, rear flasher.

Raleigh Tourist DL-1 - sleeping for 40 years

Sheldon Brown wrote that the chaincase was dropped in favor of the hockey stick in 1952 due to the higher tariffon bikes weighing over 40 pounds.

    How old is everyone

Chronologically I'm 73, most days I can pass for 50, most people who know me say I act like I'm 13. I upset people with the following: "Are you a veteran ?" "Yes." "What branch ?" "Army" "Did you see action ? "Cuban Campaign, 1898"

Raleigh Tourist DL-1 - sleeping for 40 years

Sheldon Brow said the chaincases were dropped from bikes imported to the US starting in 1952, the tariff was much higher on bikes weighing more than 40 pounds, they dropped the chaincase for the hockey stick.

Craziest reason ever for buying a bike?

Having a spare. I have 2 Raleigh Tourist DL-1s, a 1976 and a 1978, both have the (to me) highly desireable 22" frame. I have 2 Schwinn Superiors-in red-with the internally brazed frame. I have 2 Dunelts. Found a nice one on Craigslist, contacted the seller, took the train to his town, he brought...

how many Cabers have ridden 100 miles on a bike all at once?

Only one informal Century on my 1978 Schwinn Superior in 2001. Rode 47.7 miles on my 1969 Dunelt in April, did not feel bothered by the one handlebar grip position.

Raleigh Tourist DL-1 - sleeping for 40 years

Check the position of the indicator spindle, sounds like it is not seated properly Also probably needs oil. SirMike noted the proper way to push off with the 24" frame-unless you are a 6-footer-is to place your left foot on the pedal-in the high position-push off, then swing your right leg over...

Raleigh Tourist DL-1 - sleeping for 40 years

"Push her uphill" -? Easy to lower the gears with the SA hub. I live at the top of a fairly good sized hill, all my 3-speeds have SRAM 24 tooth cogs, I have seen a Sturmey Archer one listed, also a Shimano. On my 26" wheel bikes that gives me a top gear of 66, on my DL-1s top gear is 73, close...

    Where to go for 40-635 tires (28 x 1 1/2 roadster)?

My commute was pretty much in-town, lots of stop and go traffic, I switched from 10 speeds to 3 speeds in the late 1990s, found them more suited to that type of riding.

    Where to go for 40-635 tires (28 x 1 1/2 roadster)?

My commute ? About 6.5/9 miles one way, depending on which route I take, if I go shopping, to the Library, etc. I live at the top of a good sized hill, I use SRAM 24t cogs, that lowers the gears nicely for hill climbing. I have several 3-speeds, rotate them.

    Where to go for 40-635 tires (28 x 1 1/2 roadster)?

I use Kendas on my 1976 Dl-1-which is a commuter.

65 Western Flyer Raleigh made 3 speed roadster

Some people have all the luck. A Brooks saddle and he'll really be set to go. Also I would add a rear brake, IMHO those hub brakes are best used as a back up, an emergency brake

Raleigh Tourist DL-1 - sleeping for 40 years

Bought my 2 off Craigslist, also got my Brooks B33, B73 and B135 saddles off Craigslist, so that's where I would post first.

    What is the “Store Badge”?

Grocery chains chains in some states have store brand liquor, there was a liquor store in my town years ago that had a private label.

    What is the “Store Badge”?

I just bought a Pierce Arrow (made by Raleigh) which, as a board member pointed out, was a private label of an NYC bicycle shop. You see the same thing in firearms. Sears had the Ted Williams store label, years before that the A. J. Aubrey label, Montgomery Wards had Westernfield, a number of...

    Rudge sports info/help

The hub is stamped 8-59 but it has a generic chainwheel. Raleigh bought out Rudge in 1943. I have a 1954, has the distinctive Rudge chainwheel.

    Pierce Arrow 3-speed

That's the one. Lighting system didn't work when I tried it, everything else is fine. Though the seatpost is in there TIGHT.

    Pierce Arrow 3-speed

Bought a Pierce Arrow 3-speed off Craigslist. In fact there are photos of it on Google Images-it's the black one in fromt of the radiator. In good shape, shifts smoothly, B-72 saddle in good shape. Has the Raleigh stamp on the handlebar stem, a generic chainwheel. SA hub marked 2-67.Was this...

    Riding a Century on a 3-speed

The first centuries were ridden in 1888, high wheelers and safety bikes-all single speeds. And on those rough roads.

    Riding a Century on a 3-speed

Years of commuting and living at the top of a fairly good grade have made me a hill climber, all my 3-speeds are geared for hills. Probably do a loop here in Central NJ, south of where I live reasonably flat, gently rolling at best.

    Must have bike tools

A cotter pin press for English 3-speeds. I bought the Park 40+ years ago, discontinued IIRC, Bikesmith Designs lists one.

    Riding a Century on a 3-speed

Has anybody else ridden one ? I have ridden only one informal century-over 20 years ago ! Furthest I have ridden on a 3-speed is 47.7 miles, did not find the wide saddle-Brooks B66 on my 1969 Dunelt-uncomfortable nor the lack of variety in handlebar positions. Recall an article in the LAW...

The CABE CONFESSIONAL Bike Skeletons in the Closet - Share Your Tragic Bicycle Decisions, Regrets

Only 2 really, neither that tragic. I had a Raleigh Tourist badged as a Royal Scot-a foundling, didn't cost me anything. I had been looking for one for a while. Found that 24" frame not meant for my 5"10" 30" inseam. Bought a very nice near mint 1974 Raleigh Sport at a yard sale, dark blue, pale...

Walmart asked not to sell bikes

A big change from say 40 years ago when "department store" bikes were either US or say Taiwan made. I steer new bicyclists to Craigslist, here in Mercer County, NJ there is the Trenton Bike Exchange/

    Raleigh Rod Brake Have Value?

I paid $400 apiece for mine-they have the (to me) very desirable 22" frame. Both were near mint.

    Where Have They Gone.....

I have done very well with Craigslist, found a mint 1966 Dunelt with coaster brake, and got both my 22" frame Raleigh Dl-1s that way. Pass the word among fellow enthusiasts-this board. e.g.
  34. B

    Raleigh Rod Brake Have Value?

I liked my 1976 22" so much I bought another, a 1978. Biggest drawback to the Dl-1 is the rear facing dropouts require chain tensioners, repairing a flat is much more of a production, having a master link is a must. Yes they have a different feel to them-which is quite enjoyable IMHO.

    Univega Rover III

Anyone else have one, know anything about it? I recently retrieved one I loaned out, while cleaning it up I was once again struck by how the frame looks like a Raleigh ? Indeed, except for the Shimano hub and trigger it could pass for a Raleigh sports.

how many Cabers have ridden 100 miles on a bike all at once?

20 years ago, I was 51 at the time. My cyclocommuting kept me pretty fit, set off one day on my red Schwinn Superior, when I realized I had gone 65 miles without even noticing it I decided to go for 100. Ended up doing 112 miles, got home at 2AM. All my bikes have generator lights and flashers...

Here I Go Again...Another Raleigh Sports...

Always room for one more, and for $50 !? I topped by Trenton Bike Exchange a little while ago, a Green Raleigh Sports called my name-$100. Hub stamped 1-69, the frame looks older.
  39. B

    Raleigh Rod Brake Have Value?

That one looks to be in excellent shape, too good to be a parts queen. At $90 I would grab it.

how many Cabers have ridden 100 miles on a bike all at once?

Only once, informally. Set out one pleasant some afternoon on my 1979 Red Schwinn Superior, when I finally looked down at my odometer realized I had gone 65 miles, I said I'll go for 100-actually did 112. Got home at 2AM. All my bikes have generator sets, flashers on the rear rack, I wear a...

Wheel building class..How much would you pay?

I built my first wheel-a rear wheel for a 10-speed-in 1983 with a basic wheel truing stand, dishing tool, and Jobst Brandt's The Bicycle Wheel.

    Phillips Birmingham Bicycle

The flattened crown on the front fork looks like it came off a Dunelt.

    Super clean 1970 Raleigh DL1

They are out there. 4 years I acquired a mint 1966 Dunelt coaster brake model.
  44. B

Kirk Douglas riding a (possibly?) Raleigh rod brake roadster.

The picture is not reversed, the buttons of his jacket are on the right, the cover of the fly of his pants in in the correct position. It looks like the bell on the handlebars is on the left-?
  45. B

    Super clean 1970 Raleigh DL1

Looks like it was just assembled. Quite a find !
  46. B

Humber Sports 3-speed with tubular front fork.

If the Dyno works and the price is reasonable I would think hard about it. Needs a good cleaning up, some steel wool and oil on the chrome but that is a good rainy/snowy/icy stay at home day project.

Bicycling in the Bad Old Days....

...of Occupied France, 1940-1944. Reading Les Parisiennes by Anne Seba, several pictures of women on bicycles-they had mixte frames back then, one picture shows how women dealt with Vichy's frowning on women wearing pants by wearing divided skirts. I wonder where they got the energy, what with...
