Hi all,
I've been tinkering with my Hawthorne, New cog on rebuilt new departure hub, all bearings cleaned and regreased. Installed a correct crank and pedals and added some truss rods and vintage seat along with new tires and tubes. here are a before and after pics. Still looking for a carrier...
Hey everyone,
I just spent some time looking over my "new" Hawthorne and I just noticed some things that got me to thinking. First I was wondering if this might be a very early post war bike? The rims are not chromed but painted a dull dark gray color which seems to be the original paint, could...
Hi everyone,
Just an update. I decided to go with the Hawthorne, I would have liked the Phantom but after calling the seller multiple times, each time he took my number and said he would call me back to arrange a time and never would. I said "screw it", so after work last night I went and picked...
That's what I thought, but I looked at two other sites and they said the second number was the month! Guess it doesn't make that much difference either way.
Hi all,
Well I spent labor day going over my roadmaster. I found a very faint date code on the Morrow hub after cleaning off the rust- K4 which, after some digging on this site means April 1941. From what I can tell the wheels are original to the bike. Also the front tire is a B.F. Goodrich...
I just picked up this Roadmaster locally on Craigslist. I think it's prewar, the serial number is J62506. I was hoping some one could give me some pointers as to cleaning up the original paint and what kind of chain guard this bike would have had originally? I'm also hoping to find a tank for it...
here are a couple of pics of the bikes. Again I haven't seen them yet in person. I'm kind of drawn to the Hawthorne due to it's condition and being a prewar bike.
hi,
I'm looking for some input here. I have the opportunity to buy a prewar skiptooth Hawthorne with the curved fender braces. I haven't seen it in person yet, but from the pictures it looks to be a good original bike minus the seat which is later. Very little rust, original green and white...
Hey everyone,
So, I've been working on dads Shelby. I'm waiting on some parts for the rear hub so I decided today to strip off the 37 year old paint job I did back when I was a teen. I have the frame down to bare metal and I was noticing that a lot of the brazed joints are fairly rough, not...
Hi,
Thanks for the info! My bike looks almost exactly like the middle bike minus the hand brake. Will post some pics when I get a chance to move it out of the garage, not a high priority, I was basically just curious.
Kevin
Hi,
I just wanted to show off my unexpected Flea market find for today! I guess I was meant to find her as wasn't going to go and then changed my mind at the last second. Serial number says 1955. I needed another bike like I need another hole in my head, but there was just something about her...
Hi,
Can anyone here tell me who made bicycles for Sears in the early '70s? I have my very first bike which is a purple 20 inch with the slick rear wheel, banana seat with sissy bar and chopper handlebars. My parents bought from Sears I think in 1971 and it has a Sears head badge, but it sure...
Hi,
Thanks for the info! Your thoughts could very well be correct as to it being a refurbished bike, but if it was it appears to have been very well done! I'm sure it made no difference to Dad though. At this point I guess I'll never know for sure as dad is gone. All I know is we pulled it out...
Hi,
No date on photo unfortunately, going by age, my dad is about 9-10 years old in the photo. that would date the picture to around 1939 or 1940. The bike does look to be quite new, it's possible it's a picture taken just after he got it, but I can't be sure of that. I have the head badge, it's...
Hi Chad,
Thank you for the pictures of your bike! It appears to have the same detailing that shows up on the first vintage picture. Would you mind if I copied them for reference for my bike? What is the main body color? It appears to be black. I do have the head badge but it's kind of worn, I...
Hi,
I'm Kevin and I'm a new member here, so I just wanted to say hi. I've had an interest in old bikes for years and my very first bike is this one. My dad's bike from when he was a kid, a Shelby Traveler Serial number N348620. My dad and I hauled it out of the attic in my Grandmas garage back...
