Thanks so much for that info to help ID the year. He must have switched the handlebars. I'm going to clean and polish it, then hopefully donate it to a friend's collection.
I've revived this thread to give an update on the bike. My uncle and my aunt both passed away within three weeks of each other a couple months ago. They had just celebrated their 70th anniversary. He went first. My cousins gave me the bike because he told them he wanted me to have it. I'll...
I haven't been on here in a while. I just inherited this Varsity from my uncle and I'm trying to figure out what year it is. The serial number says it's a 65 but the Campus green paint and the stem shifters say otherwise. I'm thinking 68?
Take the advice from all the experienced minds on this site, and just clean it up nicely, new grease and bearings and ride and enjoy it. I took their advice, except for painting the light, and I'm very glad I did. Yours looks just my uncle's. Get it rolling, it's a hoot to ride. Good luck!

I brought him the bike today and he loved it. He has it on display in his den. He's not putting it back in the garage. He was teary eyed and so was my aunt.

New handlebar grips and I got the brake hooked up. It's done and it rides like a dream. I didn't do anything with the bent fork. It rides straight so maybe someday the next owner can tackle that issue if they choose to. Thanks to all for the encouragement, and the nice comments. It really helps...
This was my first time working on a balloon tire bike so I made some mistakes and asked some questions but I learned a lot with the help of this forum. I made the mistake of painting the headlight but I then made it look old again. It looks better now. I also ordered a new New Departure coaster...
I finished it today except for the brake. He didn't have it hooked up and I'm not positive where I'm supposed to bolt it to the chainstay. Should it go straight across? I didn't do anything with the electric lights or horn. Someone will do a more thorough restoration some day and deal with that...
I made an amateur mistake by not writing down exactly which nuts and washers went in what order when I removed the front wheel and now I'm a little confused on how to do it. I could also use some advice on getting the front wheel back on the fork. Do you just spread it open or do you put the...
I plan on getting a picture with him when it's done. Here's his before picture, the first time he had seen it in 60+ years.

I'm waiting for tires to arrive hopefully by the weekend. I've tried 3 bike stores to see about straightening the fork, and they all looked like I was asking them for a million dollars. [emoji34]
I'm going to try it myself. I read a lot of the threads on this forum, and it looks doable.

After washing with car soap I just used a liquid polishing compound, lightly, then car wax. It's got lots of chips and surface rust but the surface is smooth now.

edit...I just remembered that I took the advice of forum members and tried using 0000 steel...
It's amazing what you find under all the dirt and grime when you clean, polish and wax it. It's too bad there won't be a big WOW factor when it's done and I give it back to my uncle. He really hadn't seen it in 60+ years except for the 10 minutes it took me to tie it to the back of my car after...
I rebuilt the rear hub yesterday. My first time with this type of New Departure hub so I watched some YouTube videos. I thought I did everything correctly but after assembling it, I can't tighten it properly. There's a lot of play in the gear. Also, I can spin the gear counterclockwise...
I agree what you have all said about maintaining the old look and patina the bike has. The only thing I have painted and planned on painting was the light, and I wish I wouldn't have. I painted it ivory and came out nice but it's too nice for this bike. I was mainly concerned with the rust...
The paint on the headlight was shot but I could tell it was white so I repainted it today. The holder for the green reflector didn't appear to have been painted unless it all completely wore off. Were those painted? The original lens is kind of yellowed from age.

I worked on the front hub today and did some polishing of the front wheel. The wheel is painted the same as the bike. The spokes cleaned up well too. This was my first time working with a front fork system like this. What did people do back then when they had to remove the tire? Everything has...
I took off the front end with no problems at all. He must have it something pretty hard because the fins on the left side of the fork crown are slightly compressed. I may leave that all alone. He's never going to ride it. It's going to just be for show basically.
I opened the tank. Wiring is bad...
I didn't notice the fork until you mentioned it. It's hard to really tell it's bent in person. I'm going to make some initial cleanup of the front end today and see what it looks like. It so full of saw dust and years of dust from the garage that it's hard to see all the details. As a whole, the...
This belongs to my 90 year old uncle who reluctantly agreed to allow me to refurbish it for him. He thinks he bought it in 1941 maybe, and stuck it in the rafters in his garage around 1956 possibly. I brought it down yesterday for the first time since then. It's completely original and I think...
I picked up the exact bike last summer. It was an absolute wreck but it cleaned up nice after new powder coat. You're going to really enjoy riding it.

I figured it had something to do with the lug rather than the frame manufacturer. Thank you for all the great info you and others have provided. I'm getting anxious for warm weather so I can ride it. I took some pics today.

I don't recall why I was thinking it was right hand thread both sides. It is not. LH on the ds and RH on the nds. English thread.
I'm not sure what the seatpost clamp might be missing. It seems to work fine, and doesn't appear inadequate to me. I think he cleaned it up somewhat before painting...
Thank you.
Each number is about 3/16". I think the stamping on the steerer tube was the same size.
Here's an old picture from a former owner.

That would be Buddy. He's one of my five strays that I've kept that people have left on my property over the years. I live on a farm and for some reason people feel It's a good idea to abandon their cats out in the country. I have three inside that no longer ever go out, and two more outside...
He moved a pump peg closer to accomodate a more modern pump. They were pretty far apart. I also had a left side cable guide added. He used a correct matching piece he had on hand. I believe the rear dropouts are Stallard, as I've determined through research. Neither the front or rear have any...
All great info. Very much appreciated. The person who painted it for me, Andy Muzi from Yellow Jersey, said there were no markings on the frame to identify it as Reynolds 531 or A&P, but he said that means nothing. Only the A&P markings on the steerer tube. I know it weighed just under 4 lbs...
It did have just a right side shifter boss. I had the frame painted, and had him install two new modern bosses.
The restoration is now complete, but I'd like to be able to decal it if I knew what decals to use.
I'm trying to get this bike identified, and am looking for anyone who recognizes certain features like the "A" on the seat tube lug along with the fish mouth stays. I believe It's English, from the 40s or 50s. Accles & Pollock "A", along with serial number 95112 with a 7 below it on the head...
I've been refurbishing a 72 Super Sport for my brother in law and I've run into a problem with the chain skipping when it's in the small small position. It looks like the chain is on too much of an angle. I tried to show in the pics. It's a new KMC z33 chain. I think he changed the wheel at some...
