I bought this 1946 Monark Rocket bike for $30. I cleaned and cleared the frame to preserve the patina. I took the wheels, fenders and fork from a newer bike. Painted the wheels and re-created the patina on the fenders and chainguard to match. I restored the seat and pedals. Bought new tires...
Great information. I have no clue who John is/was. I just mentioned it so people didn't think I was taking "WAG." I'm 65 and back in 1967 I started a used bike shop out of the building on the end of my grandparents car wash in Moraine Ohio. My grandparents found someone closing out a bike...
Mine too. I bought a new green SS5 in 1970 for $97. Ordered it from a catalog at a bike shop in Ohio. Traded it for a chrome Sears minibike. I've been looking too. But I do remember they weren't that fun to ride.
Have a new one on this bike, but only a few responses and didn't get an answer to a question I asked.. This thread also asked a question that wasn't answered originally. So, I asked if they ever found the answer. That's why I reopened it and I got more info in this post than my new one. Go figure.
First, thanks for all of the replies. I'm new to this and learning a lot. I found this on another forum and other than it being a 26" and no short vertical bar?, it has the straight down tube and 2 curved top bars.
Here's what rms37 wrote about it..... "This bike is an uncommon variation of...
So, same spiral design, but the difference is skip tooth or not. Correct? I'm learning. If so, what does it mean to have a CWC on this bike? It's been pointed out twice for some reason.
That's awesome. Same brake arm too. OK, that's what I'm going with. With all of your knowledge, I'm guessing those serial numbers aren't decoded. BIG THANKS!!!
I've been in the collision/restoration industry since 1974. I fabricate/repair parts for cars worth $75k - $1.3M. ("Metalman") I can pick apart just about anything not factory. I can assure you that nothing has been modified. It has some repairs from the frame cracking behind the kickstand...
I dated it from 38-41 by identifying the New Departure brake arm. So, that makes sense. You're the first person to acknowledge the serial number on the rear. EVERYTHING I have read states it should be on the bottom bracket, But I've seen at least one other stamped here.
I wouldn't be surprised. I have a skip tooth 24" Rocket that's stamped on the left rear (fork?) at the axle. I've only seen one other bike stamped there.
I already had the guy from the national bicycle museum say it's real and hasn't been modified including that short vertical bar. But the CWC chainring is standard on every pre-war Monark I've seen.
I picked this up today at a swap meet for $30. As you can tell it has the serial plate on the bottom bracket. Serial number is A0038335. According to the serial number data I found on here by John, it shouldn't have a serial number lower than 118106. So, what year is it? I'm finding a lot...
I grew up back there. Still have family in Moraine (Miami Shores). If he was scared, I'll assume he was in Miami Shores. It was originally a poor section of town. My Dad's house as a kid would get flooded out occasionally before they built levys. They were known as "river rats" because they...
My dad grew up there in the Shores. My cousin and his adult kids still live there. It borders W. Carrollton and all of the kids in Moraine go to W. Carrollton schools. A good friend was once the mayor of Moraine.
Thanks so much for the info. I still haven't found an example of a 24" bike (all are 26") or one with the short vertical bar. But, I guess one of them could have it covered by the tank. I'll look on your site. Any other help would be appreciated.
I recently bought this bikefor no other reason than it's old and is a 24 inch. Serial number 12C962. From details like the sprocket, chainguard, kick stand mounting area, top of the rear fork tube, etc., I think it's a Monark Rocket. But I can't find anything like it with a skip tooth sprocket...
