Took my JC Higgins out for a ride along the beach today. She started life in the US, then the UK for 5 years, and now resides in Australia. It's good to have her back and in one piece.
After living in London for 15 years I have recently moved back to Australia to be closer to my parents. While in London I had collected some bikes that I shipped over with me and they have finally arrived safe and sound (after 3 months at sea). I took my dad for a ride and it was the first bike...
What is the sleeve you have put on the seat post? What does it do exactly? I'm having issues with the seat post on my Elgin and have been trying to figure out how to fix
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know what size screws I need for my back fender so I can secure it to the frame correctly? The small screw holes on the frame are threaded.
thank you in advance
Nick
I bought this red JC Higgins tank from the US before I even owned a bike. While searching ebay UK for old junk I stumbled across a red JC Higgins bicycle!!! I couldn't believe my luck as these bikes are very hard to find in the UK so to find a matching bike to the tank I already owned was like...
My three bikes in London UK a few weeks ago. They are now somewhere across the ocean on their way to Australia! I cant wait to see them again...hopefully in one piece
I found this girls Higgins during the week off the Australian equivalent of Craigslist. I've been told its an early 50's bike? Someone has painted it over the years and put a Schwinn badge on it? I'm thinking of trying to strip the paint off to reveal the original underneath.
Hi guys,
I'm looking for one of those small brackets that goes under the front fender on Elgins. Below is a photo of the bracket and the fender it's for
many thanks
Nick
Hey guys,
Not exactly bike related but has anyone kept their vintage Vans shoes or race jersey from back in the day? I would love to see some photos if so
it was too nice to pass on so ill slowly start collecting the missing parts over time. The wheels are in really good shape and the paint has the right amount of surface rust and on it as I dont like them too clean.
I would like to find some photos of what this bike should look like if restored...
Hey guys,
I moved to Australia a few weeks ago and stumbled across this womens JC Higgins bicycle. Apparently it was brought into Australia in the 1950's when an American couple re located here for work. At some point someone has re badged it with a Schwinn head badge.
I'm trying to figure out...
haha oh really? I thought they were the correct ones because I have the two holes on top of the front fork where the fender screws into? I'm new to this bike thing if you cant tell =)
Hi guys,
I recently purchased these fenders for my Elgin and I was wanting some advice.
They were originally a dark navy blue but at some point they were covered in house paint. I was wondering if I should try and remove whats left of the house paint or leave it incase I take off any more of...
Thats what I was thinking. I don't have the skill at all but was thinking if I could find a cheap rusted out tank or even half a tank and take it to a fabricator to reproduce one for me or even a handful to offer to other members on here
I recently bought a 1939 Elgin curve bar bicycle and I was wanting to buy a long tank for it. Obviously they aren't cheap so I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to make their own tank before?
thanks for the advice, there seems to be so many variations of the same frame/bike. I'm wanting to find a picture of a completely original 1939 bike so I can see exactly what mine should look like once complete.
Hey Chris,
thanks for the heads up, I just read another thread about this a few days ago. I would have just bought the first one I found so luckily I saw that haha
Hi guys,
I'm trying to find some more information on my recent find. Does anyone know what colour these 1939 Elgin bicycles came in and what stencil/decals they had?
I've seen some that look like a dark blue so I was wanting to collect some parts in that colourway if possible. Does anyone have...
Good idea, I haven't actually checked for the original colour. The guy I bought it from had it re painted to match his VW camper van annoyingly. He put some Columbia fenders on it that are almost a perfect colour match but they will be replaced one day. Im hoping to find a tank and then base the...
thanks for your help. I cant believe its from 1939!
I dont think I will fully restore it but I would like to collect some of the original parts over time...especially a tank although I know that will be $$$
Hi guys,
I found this Elgin bicycle over here in London UK and Im needing some help to ID the year. The bike has been re painted by the previous owner so its difficult to make out the serial number but I think it reads
MOD 192
SEP 126828
Does anyone have any pictures of how this bike should...
I was looking at the pictures of your bike again and just realised that mine must have originally had the same front fender as yours as the fork has two small holes on the sides...I was wondering what they were for! haha
Love your bike! I want to try and age/rust my paint to look like your bike as I dont like how its been freshly painted.
Do you happen to know why your bike has the hole in the frame for the back of the chain guard to screw into and mine doesn't? Im guessing that is down to what year they came out?
