Picked up a couple of frames and bits, probably just for parts. The Dayton has a serial # of 13996, no prefix. Mid 30s? Not sure about the red one- maybe a CWC?
I had good luck straightening a pair o’ Torrington pedals from my c.1939 Excelsior. I chocked a threaded cast iron union up in my vice whose inner diameter was about the same dia. as the grease cup of the pedal. This seemed to apply pressure in the right places and slowly pushed back into place...
Finally back together. Went for the shakeout cruise this afternoon- there was some technical difficulties on the ride back where the rear hub innards tried to unscrew themselves but I will sort that out. Anyway, will be on the lookout for a few more period accessories and a drop stand for less...

highjack, lowjack, its all good. so, took a picture of the serial number- see picture attached. I found this 1960 ad which seemed to match the the head and tail lights
Thanks- I think its all there. All the lenses are intact, I will have a peak under the bonnet when I get back
Are all the light tank parts intact?
PS Flight/Spaceliners didn't have dual fop bars IIRC.
Updates and a question. An interesting blue on blue paint scheme beneath. So far have just been using a plastic scraper and going for the low hanging fruit of unbonded paint layers. I hate that you all might guilt me in to this :) as I go blind and insane.
So question: the head badge nuts are...
I picked this up as part of a package deal with a 30s snap tanker (separate post).
Its out of my wheelhouse of main interest but the more I look at it, I kinda like it. Seems to be dead original, and I think all the hard to find / easy to break bits are all there. Came with a bonus...
Just picked this and a 60s Western Flyer space / sonic something or other (separate post). Pretty sure its a Colson / sister brand but will do a little careful paint removal around the head to see if I can see a ghost of the badge (missing prior to re-paint).
Has been painted over obviously...
Sweet ride! What are you going to do with it? I just picked up a similar one. I was going to / still might fix it up for my wife to see if I could spread the bike obession disease to her (veteran marriage move). We'll see. Anyway, good luck with yours. I'd love to see a closer shot of the seat...
Almost back together...so the 2nd and 3rd pictures convince me that this was not re-badged. I took apart the bottom bracket at it was a real hodge podge of parts. 2 different bearing manufacturers. I'm thinking that the chainring and possibly crank might not be original. If it isn't a Harris...
Thanks for the info! - Based on what non-fixie sent, I've been able to find one (in Europe) similar in 35mm press fit, the axle is slightly longer which I will look to see if its going to matter. Otherwise....
Looking for some help on finding a part. I have an 80s Gazelle that's my daily driver / don't care if it gets scratched bike. It has cottered pedals which kept coming loose no matter how many times I tightened the cotter pins. Finally disassembled the whole bottom bracket and found that the axle...
2 holes, no additional markings or numbers on the seat tube.
Sorry for slow reply. 2 hole badge, nothing else on seat tube except part of this decal (see photo).
“Tanks” for the info everyone. Looks like I have a new set of tires and a couple of missing parts to source. I will post to the wanted page too but if anyone has a set of tanks for this I would be interested.
Picked this one up today. Serial #106042, if anyone has insight on Excelsior- what year this was made, etc doesn’t seem to be the normal tonnage of information on this company.
Mercian-
Sure does look like the link you sent. Do you know what would a Pope badge of that era look like? or would it have been sold under a number of other brands? I want to remove the later house paint, maybe there might be a ghost mark between the black paint and the red primer.
Wow does my yard look like crap. I also need help with lawn care.
So just bought this off the ebay a few days ago (sorry if the other bidder is on this forum! we can talk) I originally bought it for parts since its a smallish frame but a few things didn't make sense.
- The Pope badge looked...
A friend of mine thrust this upon me and I was forced to accept. He was the original owner, rode it for a few weeks but wanted a stingray so bad he never went back to it. Its been in storage since. He estimates under 10 miles on it.
Amazing condition, needs almost nothing but fresh grease and...
FTT-
Good eye! it is a ND model A coaster brake. I would like to know what saddle it had on its originally. The more I stare at mine I'm wondering if mine is missing a front loop spring?
Original renovation plan: Source period hubs and have replica wheels made so that bicycle can be a rider...
Thanks for the info everyone. I know from this 1895 Kenwood catalog they did make their own proprietary saddles (or repackaged someone else's). None of theyse looked anything like mine so hence my query- these all seem more like racing or gender-reassignment saddles. Anyway, I guess no silver...
Trying to find any information on this saddle from my 1910ish big K badged Kenwood. Has (or had...) a plywood sub-base and I assume a stuffed leather top. Seams like saddles seem to be found in intact condtion or bare frames and not a lot in between so I haven't been able ID it.
Any help...
Hi-
Adorable miniature pair of turn of the century wooden grips. These are for a 5/8" +/- handlebar. Reapeat, 5/8" handlebar. Minty condition, maybe new old stock. Would prefer to trade for a good pair of repro or period grips for a 7/8" handlebar. Lemme know. Thanks, TMS
Sending up the Bat Signal hoping that a CABEd Crusader can come through for me. I'm cleaning up a set of #7 Torrington pedals to use on a rider. The right one is fine and should go back together nicely. The left one has an issue. The outer bearing cone/nut must have gotten out of wack at some...
So...talk me off the ledge or at least off the threshold of my local hobby shop where I load up on British green spray paint.
I've got my c.1954 Raleigh Superbe roadster apart and am washing the scuzz of it. The paint below is A LOT more faded and chalky than hoped. While I love patina bikes...
Did a quick re-wire on this old delta fender light. After seeing an original wiring diagram with the 2 D-cells, I can't believe these things ever worked. The toggle switch is supposed to push a contact into the back of the battery? Anyway, safe to say after 50 years and a leaky battery or two...
Found this dude on the Norfolk Craigslist and fell in love with the patina and old license tag. All I did aesthetically was give it a gentle scrub with WD40 and 0000 scotchbrite pads, figured I can always do more later but can't put paint and honest wear back on. Pretty original except for the...
I'll snagged an ok looking pair of the interweb the other day but these look more faithful to at least what's become the most popular TOC pedal. I'll keep an eye out for a pair or if you have a source, please PM me. Happy hunting.
Maybe I'll get a set, drag them behind my car for a few miles, dip them in acid and bury them in the back yard and see if they look right in the spring.
Can't wait to see that! - I had thought of doing that as well, the only thing stopping me was a lack of lathe, milling machine, finesse, knowledge, experience, taps, dies...
So...I think I have my list of needed (or at least hard to find) parts for my c1905 Kenwood down to pedals.
I'm not prepared to spend $250-400 for a useable set of TOC pedals at this juncture.
I've seen some ok looking quill pedals that maybe I could boil in bleach to make them look right-ish...
Thanks SirMike1983 and KingSized HD for the input and the kind offer of the decal - definitely take you up on that!
I bought a small bottle of a cold browning solution from MSM (via eBay) and tried it. Not gangbusters but its working...slowly. I've re-applied about 3 times and it's at least...
Thanks- I think the only thing I'm not totally happy about is the fact that there's bare steel down in the deep crevices. I deliberately did the chainguard first thinking that if things went south, that's a replaceable item. If I had to do over, I probably would have pulled it out sooner to...
Its here! Its here! The replacement front fender for the Superbe finally got here from Canada. Not exactly "new old stock" as described but beggars can't be choosers and the price was right. The slight beat-upness I think will go well with the bike. I about had a stroke when I saw the package -...
Kato- awesome job! When you say “taken 2 weeks so far” are we talking like ‘a couple hours each evening’ or like ‘full time job’? I have a really nice original Dayton on its way to me and I wasn’t sure I even wanted to clean it but you’ve made me a believer in the WD40 method. The Tiger I’m...
Started pulling apart the 1950s Tiger I got as part of a package deal for an old Raleigh. I figured I would begin my training on the suble art of Evaporust and see if I can bring this Tiger back from extinction. I thought I'd start on the chainguard to see how the rust removal goes with the...
The wheels on my c.1900-1915 Kenwood have a similar red hue to them. I sent a picture to a friend who works for the National Trust and his colleagues believe it's a red-tinted varnish. Yours looks like a more intense red than mine but could be the lighting. Looks like yours and possibly mine had...
Hello fellow Cabers-
Just as the ad says, I'm looking for a 32 hole front hub or whole wheel, condition of rim not important - going to get a new wooden rim made. The rear hub is a New Departure model A. I have a c. 1910 Kenwood 28" wooden wheeler. I've decided to take off and preserve the...
Sir Mike- thanks! I understand you're the authority on these. You're absolutely right, its a 22" frame with 28" wheels. I'm so excited to have it and begin the renovations. As of this afternoon, I may...MAY have found the very last new old stock front fender out there -complete with green and...
Thank you King, wish the gal came with it too. One of thing I notice about my bike is that my rear fender is domed - no flutes (guttering? - not sure of the term). The Brits made great bikes but they were lousy record keepers, still trying to decode the frame number (DF 52533) - there seems to...
Need a front fender for this 1957 (?) Raleigh. Has 28" wheels. Once I clear the scuz off of it I can tell what exactly what model it is. Also interested on a cap for the battery (looks like it was once rubber), maybe a pump for show.
