Last trip down to my grandparents house and found a ladies rollfast step through - although this one was technicall outside the barn as a cousin had moved it out around 10 yrs ago. An old tricycle and a couple old scooters. I’ll clean them all up and hope I don’t get divorced.
Edit: forgot to...
My 1902 Pierce step through frame has been torn apart, cleaned and re greased annd now rebuilt. One fork leg was broken down by the axle and the other was cracked in same area. Had a friend who has a welder repair those areas. I had a set of Morrow hubs that I used to build a set of wheels so...
The RLT is currently waiting on a set of carbon hoops from Nobl built up with a set of Industry Nine hubs. It’s a real fun ride and a do it all kind of bike. Probably my favourite of my modern bikes to ride at the moment. A set of 40+ mm tires on it and it will go anywhere.
My modern rides:
2016 Yeti SB5c
2017 specialized Roubaix comp
2018 Nine RLT
2014 Cannondale F29 Alloy4
My kids and wife each have a similar stable. Yes we have bike issues.
So let’s say I was racing a friend of my son tonight on my bike, which I was winning of course. And let’s say while utterly destroying that 9 yr old my chain snapped in half on the chrome bike above, unfortunately leading to the 9 yr old overtaking me and mistakingly thinking he had won, which...
Chrome huffy underwent an acid bath and rebuild and repacked all bearings. Cleaned up well with very little effort. Red and black Schwinn currently enjoying a acid soak, and then will rebuild that one as well. Suspect this second one will be more work and time intensive.
Thanks GTs58. Beat me to it. I’d just found out the build date associated with the serial number. Thanks for the info in the updated chain guard and wire carrier. Any information on what is right in the bike or not is appreciated.
so Based on the serial number it looks like it is a 1950 Schwinn from Chicago. Based on the offerings in 1950, I’d guess a black phantom that is missing the headlight and the tank?
I may come by my love of bikes naturally. Before I came across the HD, Pierce, this Schwinn and Huffy (?), I already had 12 or so bikes in my garage (road, cyclocross, mountain bike), used by my kids, wife, and myself. Apparently the “problem” with bikes ran in the family.
Found another bike in another shed on one of my great grandfathers properties. Schwinn excelsior in red and black. Also took a picture of the serial number on the bottom bracket. Any idea what year this would be? This one I have given to a friend who is a fellow bikeaholic and who always lends...
Interesting. I was actually looking at springs from Modern spring based suspension forks. What I could find were larger diameter than 5/8 and would not work. I had not though of the spring from a modern suspension seat post.
Another CABE member has actually very generously sent me a spare he...
Anyone find a suitable replacement spring for the rear shock? In another post I’ve seen reference to the original spring being 6 inches long and 5/8 of an inch in diameter. What about spring rate? What lb per inch should it be? From the pieces of my original spring it seems like quite a stiff...
Beautiful bike. Mine won’t be that nice but it is coming along. Finally got stem off, front hubs cleaned and rebuilt. Starting to take apart rear hub, will clean and then reassemble,
So if it’s a fake Schwinn cantilever, I’m assuming this means that as Schwinn cantilever was a very popular and successful bike, other companies began to copy the design. I have one of those copies? I also assume I’ll be able to figure out who made this frame once I get the bike and can look...
Mixed bag bike... took the best of what was available and became the ultimate post war cruiser. Gotcha.
Ever since three hours ago I always wanted a chrome bike, so now I can cross that off my list.
So you may all remember the HD Motocyke and the Pierce Cushion I pulled from great grandfathers barn.
Pulled this out today, and will add it to my to do list. It’s a Schwinn, what kind I have no idea enlighten me.
Found this Pierce in my great grandfathers barn. Been cleaning it up to so it can sit in our living room and be ridden a few times a year.
It is rear cushion, leaf spring chain driven. Badge is type 3.
Red spray paint in head tube has come off easily. There is a layer of black paint over top...
Thought I would post some updates pictures. Wife was complaining that bike and living room smelled dusty and old. After being kicked out of house due to my suggestion that her complaint likely resulted from her poor attempt at vacuuming the previous weekend, I agreed to at least wipe the bike...
Parade bike??? Pfft, I have a 85 km gravel race I’m riding this bad boy in around middle of August. Do they make HD spandex?
But yes, in all seriousness, no rush to do anything to the bike at this point. Wife has agreed it can be art in our living room for now. I will probably pick up a...
no idea whether they are the original wood rims. They appear to have been painted an off silver at some point in their life. Once I have time I will take a closer look to see if their is any army green paint ( I think the original colour the rims would have been painted) hiding under that...
SKPC, hope these help.
Also upon closer inspection the rack appears to have been painted black at some point in its life. Some of the black paint has been chipped away and under that it appears to be he same colour olive green as the rest of the bike.
I will take some addition pictures of the stand this evening for you.
On another note, I am more convinced my great grandfather was original owner. He would have been early to mid teens 1918. When I got home I Noticed another set of letters on down tube after “Motorcyke”. Very very faint...
Okay, if I leave the repair as is, is it a bad idea to try to remove the black spray paint? On the head tube one would think there is still olive green paint u see the black spray paint.
We have a shop up here in Ottawa that specializes in retro rides. I have heard a lot of good things about them so I may stop in and have a chat with them. However I suspect this is a little more retro than they are used to.
I don’t want to repaint. I want it to stay looking how it does. I would...
Any idea what the colour scheme of this would been? Currently it is black and red. I think the red was added after the fact. The black may be original but it is in awful condition
Neither this one or the Pierce i mentioned in my other post will be for sale. Goal is to ride them. They will be our neighbourhood bikes and will hang on wall in our family room when not in use.
My understanding is that it looks like the first of the three pictures above. Remember, all I could see of it was part of a dusty dark coloured frame and the front crankset. I have now been told it’s an olive green and the paint is in excellent condition. Weathered and faded a little, but all...
Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I get the idea from these responses and the numerous private messages and there is some potential that this is a pretty special and valuable bike. Only way to find out is for me to get a relative to take some pictures for me so I can post or to drive...
Hi all,
So my grandmother recently passed away and as another family member and I were going through a barn at one of her properties which contained items that had belonged to my great grandfather, I found a number of bikes. One of which was hung from a back wall and which I could not get a...
