I enjoy riding my repop 48 Roadmaster that was made back in the 90s. I have ridden it several hundred miles since I bought it 3-4 years ago. The bike rides and handles super smooth and was very quiet till recently. A couple of days ago as I started my ride I heard a loud popping sound coming...
I tore this hub a while back for cleaning and greasing. Was working fine for the past year till yesterday when I noticed it sometimes takes about 1/4 to 1/2 crank turn to engage. Not every time but happens when braking then pedaling forward you get that almost 1/2 crank turn before engaging. I...
The wife found a picture of my old Panther I restored back in the late 90s. A fellow worker mentioned he had a neighbor that had an old Schwinn in the garage and wanted $50 for it. I gave my buddy the cash and bought it sight unseen. He brought it to work the next day and I was not impressed...
This helmet is about 4 years old and heavily used but in like new condition except the white plastic on the larger helmet area was yellowing and looking stained. I used a 1000 grit pad to carefully sand off the gloss, masked and shot the helmet with Rustoleum 2X green paint. It says it bonds to...
I just noticed the oil cap in the Perry coaster hub of my 55 Schwinn is missing. It was on there a couple of days ago when I added some 30w motor oil. Hopefully it’s on the garage floor somewhere. I found a plastic plug that works for now but any chance someone has the correct metal cap for my...
My grandkids are 5 and 6 and like riding bikes like grandpa. My grandson was complaining his 16” bike is hard to pedal, my granddaughter too was complaining. We’ve had the bikes for a while and they have become more interested in riding lately. The bikes are relatively new but here’s what I...
I’m servicing the Perry model B (dated 5-55) in my 55 Spitfire. Even tough it was normally working I’m glad I open it up cause there’s is very little grease inside.
For anyone that has serviced one, are the Perry internals lubed like the New Departure hubs with grease on the bearings and oil...
Did Perry make an 18 tooth hub sprocket for the hub I have which is a 1955 dated 36-13 model. This ratio should make peddling a tad easier I think. Another option would be to go with a 48 tooth or higher front sprocket? Right now it’s a 20 tooth rear and 46 tooth front setup.
I recall a post about the old CWC building still standing . I’m in Cleveland visiting and would like to go by and take a couple of pictures. Anyone know the address?
So I have been noticing a clanking noise whenever I stop peddling and coast on my skiptooth 1946 Rollfast. Only happens when I stop peddling and hear and feel a clank as if coming from the bottom bracket.
I took the bottom bracket apart thinking the bearings were bad. Inspection revealed the...
Got my ND model D clean and ready for assembly and lubrication. I read to use grease on the bearings and 30w oil on the discs. Then once assembled to add the oil thru the filler cup which I’m guessing will lubricate the inside shell walls and the rest of the parts or do I add a very thin layer...
The fender light on my 41 Columbia is in very nice shape externally. Internally had some light surface rust and minor battery acid damage. I sanded the battery contact points, cleaned and used new batteries and bulb but still it’s not lighting. The switch slides as it should with a positive...
Besides laying them on a side on a blanket, how do you guys transport the heavier bikes specially tank ones on a pick up bed?
Been thinking of making some type of portable stand and tie downs.
I remember reading a thread about making peddling easier by replacing the rear cog with a higher number of teeth but can’t find the thread. What is the highest number in teeth for both skip tooth and regular cogs?
Saw this Continental on Offer Up a while back. Was hanging on a warehouse wall with a ton of dust and grime. Cleaned and shined the frame and chrome, replaced the tires and tubes, all cables, lubed the bearings, replaced the bar tape and touched up the nicks and chips. Very smooth and fast. The...
I couldn’t resist the price so got this 51 lady Shelby from fellow caber Kirk Thomas. I’m hoping to get the wife motivated into riding it but something tells me I will doing most of the riding on this one.
The gooseneck, truss rods and rims were painted over with a metallic grey greenish paint...
It’s been one of “those” days for me. We had a gorgeous morning and wanted to go on a long bike ride but first I had to go to a couple of places for the wife which took longer than expected.
Got back home around noon time and discovered my pc was not working so off I went to the repair shop...
Picked up this 46 Rolfast in original untouched condition. The tires are US Royal Chain and look to be in new condition. Unfortunately the front tire has a partial tear on the sidewall. I took the bike apart and used 0000 steel wool and WD 40 to clean 74 years of gunk.
The paint was dark almost...
Gonna give my project an OA bath and was wondering if the plastic blue switch on the light will be attacked by the acid. Also will the bath strip off the finish on the fender braces?
These are the original grips on my 46 Rollfast and both had about a 1” crack . I remembered using a product to bond a crack in my daughters Toyota bumper that worked like a charm so I gave it a try on these grips. I failed to take a before picture but after applying the epoxy the grips look un...
What is the best method for cleaning up this headbadge on my 46 Rollfast without damaging the red paint on the letters and circle or just leave it as is?
Drove up to visit family up in ne Ohio and came across this Rollfast bike. Appears to be complete and in original condition needing clean up and new tires. The US Chain tires it has are unfortunately cracked otherwise they look new. The fender light has light surface rust and looks to be...
Any idea when this was made? I’m assuming 1950s due to the tank not having lights and having a fender mounted light that is missing. The wife has been wanting a step thru so This could be a possibility.
I would love to mount a tank and truss rods on my 1955 Spitfire. Will this be correct for this model? I think tanks give a wow factor to these old bikes.
Can the 3w double D battery powered vintage bike headlight be upgraded to a brighter light bulb? Both my lights on my bikes are ok but a brighter beam would be much better.
Mine is a 1948 Road Master reproduction weighing in at 57 lbs. my next heaviest is my 55 Spitfire at 48 lbs. My lightest is a 2019 Schwinn Volare at 28 lbs followed by a 74 Le Tour at 31 lbs.
The Roadmaster though heavy, peddles very easy and is a joy to ride. The Le Tour is outstanding and...
Got ready to head out on my Le Tour for a long ride this early morning with a pleasant temperature of 77. I was about to leave when my wife called me over to the front room. She said to please be very careful out there cause a bicyclist was killed by a hit an run driver sometime yesterday at...
Anyone familiar with a vintage bike headlight model 105C made by Saf-Tee Products and a value in mint condition? Googled it and can't find any information. TIA.
I totally forgot that these 3 Schwinns had birthdays last month:
1955 Spitfire turned 66 last month
My 1973 Speedster turned 47
And my 73 Continental also turned 47
The Atom 440 pedals in my Continental are making a snapping sound and the right one sometimes hangs up while peddling. Looks like the bearing cone in the right pedal is chewed up and is causing the issues so I would like to replace the cones on both sides. The 5/32nd bearings I can get on...
My nephew was interested in getting an easy rider for his wife and asked me about sixthreezero step through riders. Is this a good bike for casual riding? This is first time I hear of them. TIA
I recently replaced the worn chain in my 1974 Le Tour 10 speed. I went to my LBS and they sold me an SRAM PC830 8 speed chain. I asked about this chain being for 6,7, and 8 speed but they told me it works on the cassettes with 5 sprockets too. I installed the chain and all gears work fine except...
