The screw at the terminus of the cable can be your run of the mill brake caliper screw off any normal handbrake setup. The cable sleeve terminator at the barrel nut could also come from the same brake caliper.the threaded piece is in the factory drawing you posted with the note of “b”.
More like this. The cable is now anchored in the forward position and the brake arm still moves forward but the threaded sleeve end/adjuster goes into a pivot barrel at the location where the cable used to terminate.
Thinking more like this where the orange line is the sleeved cable with the pink being exposed cable. The orange cable would move forward when the brake is pulled, hence the largish loop to get it into position.
I bet you could route the cable into the mechanism as shown in the illustration but backwards with some adaptation. Put the adjustment screw pointing rear wards so that the cable housing lops out the back and up the rear stay. The cable would mount statically at the front of the brake lever and...
Thanks for the input, your thoughts match with mine regarding timeline. For some reason I remember seeing a matched pair of boys and girls bikes somewhere recently and can’t seem to find them now. Those were noted as being in the same timeframe.
Once I decide to move it on I will absolutely list...
Been working the deal on this bike since before Covid and finally picked it up today.
Does anybody know how to date these things?
Great shape needIng only a light cleanup and some new tubes. Unfortunately the seat has come unstitched along both bottom edges so I’ll need to figure out something...
The seat showed up in the mail two days before the bike showed up on the local classifieds. Will likely throw some Duro white walls on it and give it a good cleaning.
My 61 Schwinn American that I got from the original owner who’s single mother converted it for him and his brother in 1970 for their birthday. Never stored outside.
All cleaned up and ready to ride. Swapped out the seat and sissy for some cleaner ones I had on hand and went with middle weight pedals until I track down a correct set. Found a 66 knobby and an early 90’s unused westwind.
I typically tear off a little piece of steel wool and dip it in the QG and work small areas then wipe clean and repeat. It’s kinda like wiping away rust. It’s will even work on heavily rusted spots too sometimes. You’ll get the feel for it pretty quickly. A little goes a long way.
0000 steel will and some “Quick-Glo” chrome cleaner. I swear by the stuff. One one those products that was always in Grampa’s and Dad’s garages. Now I keep two or three tubs around here and at the shop.
Nice! I love my 60 Double Cab. I’ve been a VW nut since they were still cheap. Air cooled VW and Porsche restoration is my line of business. If you’re ever ready to pull the trigger on a Singlecab or any other bus for that matter hit me up, I may have a lead for you.
24x1 3/8. Same as fastback but 24 instead of 20. Should be an S5 rim. Bars are mid rise, shorter than stingray bars. I have a set in the shed for you. Can’t remember on crank but will look at my pics from my old silver mist manta. Big ticket item is the manta seat. Will cost a couple hundred but...
Fred was riding on the bars with his friend in control of the ride. As young boys always will do, you hop curbs when your buddy is on the bars! Fred slipped from the bars and his foot caught in the front wheel. Bent spokes and rim along with bent pedal. These were the replacements.
Just talked again to the original owner, Fred. He confirmed the original knobby and BFG knobby both Fell victim the the skid mark challenges of 1960’s Chicago boyhood.
Fred with his 1964 Lime
Pick up a tub of Quick-Glo off amazon and dip a little 0000 steel wool in it and rub that rust away. Check out my Lime thread to see what results I’m getting with that combo.
What a great score! I just got a 64 Lime a couple weeks ago. Such a cool color.
Another hour or two spent on the rear wheel while watching TV the other night and she’s all done. One spot about 6” long that’s pretty dull but rest shined up nicely.
Also found a later front wheel that I’ll put on the bike for now. On the hunt for a correct 64 wheel.
Well the pix were in order...
1 is what I started with
2 is about 90% done. Still need to focus around the spokes
3 shows one of the lips about half done
4 shows where I started working up over the corner onto the center section
5 shows mid cleaning of a section with a wet pile of rusty paste...
Limes popping up all over these days.
those are great looking bikes. What would be the deiferentiation between a bike having a tufted seat or not? Also fenders vs no fenders?
I had been out of the scene for a very long time. Had sold everything except 3 bikes then a friend started asking questions about Stingrays last month and now I’m right back in it. Going to dig through the shed in the next day or two to see what’s left out there. I think I have a proper front...
Popped up on local Craigslist last night. I set up the meeting for first thing this morning and made the 1/2 hour drive to pick it up.
Original owner March 1964 Lime bike. Owner grew up in Chicago and got the bike for his birthday in August of 64. Wrong front rim was replaced after he slipped...
The Quick- Glo comes in a little tub about the size of a tub of Mother’s polish. They’re around $15 on Amazon. A little goes a long way. I’m too new here to post pics yet but I used some yesterday at the shop to clean up some chrome seat recliners and they went from trashed to serviceable in...
Have you ever used Quick-Glo? I like to use a dab with the 0000 steel wool. I feel like the results are a little nicer than what I get with steel wool alone. Although I will admit that your parts look like they cleaned up VERY nicely with the 0000 alone. That’s going to make a nice rider quality...
