Park tool has what they called Master Link Pliers, (MLP 1.2), but in the video where they demonstrate the use, the pliers are designed for a different kind of master link, where it slides in and out of a secure position. I would think these would probably bend the kind of link I have no?

Yea that was not mine, I wish. I did fold the chain like the video, and pushed in like the video, but it was fixed on there good. After degreasing it, there is some rust so maybe that wasn’t helping. The plate not bent and pins are straight from what I can see maybe the photo is distorted...

Thanks, Glad I asked. But I am trying that now, and I can't pull it off with just regular pliers or deeds nose pliers. and tried a screw driver and a small flat head to wedge in there. It doesn't seem like it just pulls of. is there a good method of doing this so I won't mar the link? Tom

I will definitely work on the chain next. I hope that is it because a good chain cleaning is much easier than trying to find a decent new cup and cone set. The chain is dirty but does move freely and doesn’t seem over tight with Roughly 3/4” of play. But I will work on cleaning it this weekend.

I check this and the chainring is out somewhere between 1 to 2 mm, the cog appears to be true.

I see what your saying BuickMike. I don't think I realized that the Outside of that cone is on the outside of the bracket and cup and that it could be rubbing as the issue, but you are probably right here. Where would I find the ID of the bottom Bracket, not the crank correct?

I can try to replace the balls. They looked pretty good overall but maybe an issue? The Chain wasn't over tightened by any means and had some play in it- maybe too loose. Does the slight grooving you see on the one cone seem normal and not a possible symptom to the problem?

Thanks for sharing that. I didn't even think to look for these here. Come to think of it, I didn't even know this place existed the when i got the bike and immediately tore into it. Those will be invaluable to have and have booked marked them as they will come in handy soon i'm sure.

Great job, they look almost new. I recently pulled mine apart as well and was the same thing with the fossilized grease. It was extremely intimidating. I didn't have the diagram you have there, and just took photos at every step of the disassembly process so I could put it back together again...
