Thanks for your reply. I'm in KC too... which is why this tag was interesting to me. But if it's from a different era than my TOC parts racer, I think I'll leave it off.
I'm an infrequent poster, but have been lurking for over a year. This may be the wrong category for this inquiry (depending on what ya'll tell me I have). Thanks in advance for any perspective on this antique bicycle tag/plaque I've acquired. My question is... what era might this be from...
Here's my "mutt-racer"... purported to be TOC Pope, but I dunno. Repro wheels, tires and saddle. Like most women in my life she's a gorgeous mystery to me.
Thanks for your response. I know nothing about vintage frames but as I've compared my frame to other TOC bikes the frame struts seem to be closer together (on the head-tube) than many others I've seen, which seems to flatted the stance a bit more (less upright). In the vintage photo of the...
OH MAN! I really LOVE your Pope racer!! Those handle-bars are sick (in the good way)! That's definitely the close cousin to mine aesthetically. Thanks so much for posting this!
Howdy all... I've lurked around for for bit, and it's time roll-out my project bike for your input. I am not a vintage bike collector, but I have been a cyclist for the past 30 years, riding the latest carbon fiber road bikes for the most part. But I am also an "old soul" evidenced by my real...
Yes... that Flying Merkel wrench is
super-cool! My only other item like this is a Pope Mfg. wrench. Which makes sense as Pope is the manufacturer of many things... a nice generic branded strategy that would allow them to apply this wrench to any number of products.
Ok... I guess I wasn't aware G&J made automobiles as well, thanks for that heads-up. But to your point... Ford put their name on the tools they provided, and because it was the generic "Ford" they could apply those tools to any of it's vehicles. I'm questioning why G&J went to the trouble...
Good distinction MrColumbia... thank you for that. But the question stands... was it typical for G&J to apply "brand names" of their bicycles to the tools they included in the tool kits? The wrench ford snake posted, with a more generic approach (able to be applied across brands) would seem...
Quick rookie question... was it typical for TOC bike manufacturers to include actual bicycle model identifiers on the tools that came in the tool-kits? I can see having the company name appear, but my assumption would have been that the various bike models would include generic tool kit...
The box isn't mine... the guy who owns it is on a Facebook forum on vintage motorcycles, his name is Dennis Brilla. He reported that the box is 5.25" x 3.25". Would that accommodate the glass paper weights you have??
On those Pope "good luck" tokens... I've found examples made from three...
Here's my last item to share... it's some kind of promo device I'm sure. I'm not aware if it's bicycle or motorcycle as Reading Standard made both. Both sides of this medallion are identical. Anyone seen another?
Wow... such great stuff! I love seeing these kind of artifacts. I've collected a few of these Pope Motorcycle coins... there were a couple materials used, perhaps motivated by the beginning of WWI. I recently became aware of another guy who has THIS box from the period which is obviously...
Whew.... thanks so much for that clarification! When I researched the meaning of the slang term "catfish" it is apparently is way of calling someone a fraud. I thought that was a bit harsh for such an innocuous thread. I feel better now! 8^)
Thank you so much for your input! And the fact that you have two of this same item is interesting. I've never seen another in the few years I've had this one! I have several Pope Motorcycle coins/medallions, as well as a Reading Standard medallion from this same period. What other types of...
I'm still very new to this site and community, so please forgive me of this isn't an appropriate post. I just thought that I would share a cool little artifact I acquired awhile back. Curious if anyone else has encountered one of these? I can't swear by the vintage but my gut says it's falls...
Great! That's exactly what I was looking for... a link between to the two brands (as verified by this promotional pin). I greatly appreciate the knowledge! I'll no doubt be back with more inquiries as I try and familiarize myself to the machines that were being applied to the velodrome tracks...
Greetings all... I'm a new member and this is my first post, so be gentle with me! I've been trying to research the teens-timeframe racing models. I was under the impression that the "Rambler" was a bicycle made by Gormully & Jeffery. I recently encountered THIS (hoping the photo attaches)...
