I drove down to Corpus Christi, TX yesterday for the annual Texas District & County Attorney Association’s annual conference and continuing legal education. It’s a 5-1/2 hour drive and I stopped north of Austin for lunch. While eating lunch I started flipping through Facebook marketplace...
For sale locally. Photo is terrible. Seller says it’s a 1958 Wards Hawthorne. Looks like AMF something but I don’t recognize it.
I’m sure someone will know this one. Thank you!
I just went through most of the Shimano catalog. I'm not seeing anything that shows it will accept 12 gauge spokes, but I know it's being done somehow. I'm wondering if Husky is drilling out the flanges on those hubs?
Hey- just saw your PM. I'm showing Shimano Nexus 3 speed will accept 14 and 13 gauge spokes which are pretty big. The old Schwinn Cycle Truck used 105 gauge (I believe) which is about 12 gauge. Husky bikes sells a whole wheel with 12 gauge spokes and a Shimano Nexus 3 speed. I'll try to find...
I’m starting to think I’m a crappy bike aficionado. I stop at the same gas station a couple times a week and both times I noticed a clapped out late ‘90s Huffy Santa Fe with a flat tire, leaning against the fence by the dumpster. I asked the clerk and he said someone had left it there days...
I rode this Murray Valiant Classic around the neighborhood this morning. I dragged it out of a chicken coop yesterday and washed off the chicken poop. It’s not worth much but it’s definitely an interesting collection of parts so I gave the nice old lady her $60 asking price without any...
I ran across this bike for sale online. I wonder if it’s for sale because it handles like garbage with the wheel installed backward (or if they even noticed).
Let’s see more pictures of bikes that never even had a chance
So this last weekend I took everything apart, let the parts sit in the parts washer while I wiped the old grease out of the headset cups, greased two new SunLite #65 bearings ($1.85 each), and threw it all back together. Took less than 5 minutes and this thing steers like new. Thank you to...
I know they’re not valuable, but I have never been able to pass up a cheap Murray Monterey- so for $25 it followed me home.
Bought it yesterday off a guy who bought it new in 1983 and delivered newspapers with it. This thing is surprisingly straight with one tiny ding in the back fender, but...
I think I’ve figured it out- 2572 is a 3/16” x 15 bearing with one difference- the “flat tange.” If you compare it to a regular 3/16” x 15 bearing it appears that the 2572 has a cage that is a bit flatter. It looks like the cage is slightly squished compared to most bearings.
In the 1960...
I was riding my ‘60 Schwinn Tornado on Galveston Island and started noticing the steering had gotten really sloppy. I took it apart and realized I’m missing two balls out of the lower caged bearing and one ball out of the upper bearing.
The cups and races look good so I was going to just...
Saw this bike years ago on a music video. The head badge never comes into view clearly so this is the best still I can snap. Every time I used to see that video I was only watching the bicycle.
Looks to be vintage. There is paint wear, the front and back tires don’t seem to match (one black...
That’s kinda my issue. So, you’re going to take a potentially usable bike and essentially leave it out to rust so that eventually it can be thrown away? I fix up lots of not-so-rare or special bikes and put them back on the road.
Looks to be a 1940s or early 1950s J.C. Higgins skip tooth sprocket bike. Someone on Etsy has defaced it with gloppy blue paint.
Why?!

This 1980-something Western Flyer was a bike I didn’t want. It came in a lot of parts that I bought. It’s a junky, 80s, Taiwanese frame. The welds on the ends of the steel tubes are gloppy looking with no apparent effort made to grind them smooth before the factory sprayed on a coat of red paint...
I left work early today to go to a meeting and spotted this Western Flyer leaning against a trash can at the curb. It’s a June 1981 Murray-built Western Flyer.
Rims are Murray Ohio, Shimano d-type coaster brake (Never had a Shimano coaster brake- curious to see if it’s any good). It’s wearing...
Good point. I’d be willing to swap calipers, if necessary. I’ve seen longer Weinnman calipers. I haven’t seen a lot of rim swaps on Schwinn lightweights that were very well documented. I’m going to try the 590s and take lots of pictures and document what is required and then do the same with...
So, first things first- the bike in the photo is a 1972 Schwinn Speedster that my bicycle cleaner monkeys were wiping down in the garage for me. It’s not the bike I have a question about but it’s an electroforged Schwinn lightweight from the 70s, so close enough.
Yesterday I grabbed a black...
It’s an old junker, but I bought this 1983 Schwinn Le Tour about a week ago. It’s steel and U.S. made which I like, but I also can’t believe how well this thing performs- even with only the rear derailleur and one brake currently functioning. Can’t wait until all my parts get here!
Wow! Went to pick it up. It’s a ‘71. Seller was the original owner who bought it in 1972, rode it about 6 months and then stuck it in storage.
The chrome is beautiful. Has a couple of dents in the top of the rear fender from getting bumped around in storage. Original tires and tubes. The tires...
Bought this on Facebook marketplace. Going to pick it up in the morning. (Sorry for the terrible seller photos). It’s a 1970-something Schwinn Racer in single speed and coaster brake. I don’t run across many single speed lightweights, so I snapped this one up. (Also doesn’t hurt that Campus...
Thanks bloo & j-wagon! I’ve scrounged up a replacement for the missing safety lever, a new chain, parts to sort out the derailleur, and a replacement for the little dia-compe adjuster that goes on top of the brake lever.
Some grease and polish should put this old girl back on the road in a...
I picked up this 1983 Schwinn Le Tour last week. At $75 I feel like I paid too much, but the college kid that had it was a super nice guy. He met me at the sandwich shop he owns in a little college town nearby and threw in a really good sub sandwich so I was happy with the transaction. I also...
Done for now. The original stickers on the back fender started disintegrating (big chunks flaking off) so I scanned them and reprinted them on vinyl. Brooks B67 saddle is on. The opaque blue Messinger saddle that was on the bike has gone to a CABER with an opaque blue Schwinn. My wife and I are...
I’m looking for a 1960s Murray Middleweight rim for my 1960 JC Higgins. Chrome or painted. Front or rear (or both) is fine. I’m mostly needing the hoop of the rim and I’m going to repaint & rebuild.
Thank you!
I have a Schwinn with a 13/16” seatpost and I want to install a single rail Brooks B67. I don’t want a micro adjustment setup. I’ve been looking at a Wald 13/16” to 7/8” seatpost and a 7/8” clamp. Does that sound right?
Couldn’t sleep. Decided to go for a 12:30 a.m. ride under the full moon. I just went through this 1960 Schwinn Tornado a week ago and I’m still taking it on shakedown rides to check things out.
I really don’t like ruining originality of an old bike even if it is already kind of a beater, so I went looking around the interwebs. Found about 10 old 1960 Schwinn Tornados- none even had a monogram seat. Blue seat’s not original. I don’t have an issue changing something that isn’t original...
I thought the old blue monogram seat might have faded so I took the cover off. It’s even lighter blue underneath (because the top of the seat is dirty). It’s even more apparent in person than in the photos. Everyone that sees it says, “Cool bike! What’s up with the seat?” None of my Schwinn...
Y'all are a bad influence- I ended up buying a lightly used Brooks B67. I can't figure out if the bright blue seat that's on it is original and faded, or if it was added later. It will go in my parts bin to live another day if a bright blue schwinn beater wanders in.
