I will be corrected if I'm wrong but I don't recall Hawthorne(wards) ever offering a CWC bike that was a Straightbar(the lower of two upper bars is straight). So, Roadmaster or Western Flyer are possible Badges. They're definitely were curved bar and straightbar models during the same...
From a riding/racing perspective, I can see wanting the drum brake. On the other hand, I think these old bikes don't look so good with a lot of cables. For that reason alone, I think I'd go with the coaster.
Great! I'd be interested to know the original owner's name, if you find out, especially if he was from Des Moines-- I started racing in 1978(amateur) out of Iowa City. maybe someone I know or know of.
That bike is most likely from about 1981-- with that particular decal and the sloped-crown fork. Brazed cable guides and various other features(typical 80s Japanese lug work) suggest it's an eighties bike rather than 70s.
Well, Davenport Ia. Chief Blackhawk motorcycle swap meet approaches (aug. 31 to sep. 2). I'm wondering how many of you are going. I'll be there hunting for one very specific motorcycle and keeping an eye out for some others in certain categories. This year, I'll make a point of wearing BICYCLE...
For future reference, when looking at old road bikes, you will always know that you are looking at a lower end model (and likely low value) bike if the rear dropouts are stamped and not forged---it's the quickest way to tell. That said, as others, point out, there can still be items of good...
It seems the likely culprit was dialectric , galvanic, corrosion. I know, it's aluminum on aluminum--but the other metal is sodium. When these types of frames came out, the shop I worked at had a number come back in short order with the stems hopelessly stuck. (we sold Vitus screwed and glued...
For sure, this bike could have been other than a Hawthorne--or a Hawthorne, but lesser than the deluxe. I suggested looking for the holes because they would be definitive that its a Hawthorne. Don't know of any other use of this frame, by other names, that had the turn signal switch. (someone...
it's Snyder built and from the 50's. Look for evidence of two small holes on the top of the top bar a little(about 4 1/2" to 6" for the two holes) back from the steering tube---they would be mounting holes for turns signal switch that would I.D. the frame as a Hawthorne Deluxe. As stated above...
If it is equipped as built, It would have to be late, as Juvela suggests, and I think likely '84. Shimano 105 didn't exist until 1982 and that odd grey finish is certainly a second or third iteration (maybe even later--105 got a reboot in '86) most likely the bike would have come with Shimano...
Could be prewar or, as stated above post-war. it would have to be early post war--the truss rods changed and so did elements of the fork itself. Post a pic of the number on the bottom bracket please. The date code (as rolfaster's example-EH74) is a reverse code--so 74 would indicate 47...
I have a snyder-built bike from same time frame --aslo seatpost # only, checked bottom bracket thoroughly( enven used machinst's layout fluid and block sanded)--nothing!
I would swear those are the bars I had on my '35 Rugby (shapleigh) motobike. The original owner(my highschool friend's dad) had a name for them and said that he had special ordered them from the options in the catalogue. Many years later, I have seen Shapleigh catalogue pages, from the period...
Great evidence! The Hall-Herault Process was patented in 1884(ish)--before that aluminum was quite rare and expensive. Obviously manufacturers took advantage of the lower cost right away.
wow. what a beautiful rear wheel without the motor! It would be easy to think it's cast aluminum but there is about no chance(a patented method for producing pure aluminum cheaply was issued a couple years earlier and nobody would have gained the casting skills that quickly). Cast steel, or...
the road bike that looks like it was painted silver is most likely from Japan and shows the quality(for real) of Japanese "off the rack" bikes from the 80's. could be nice with some work.
I'm looking to find upper/lower brackets for 1935 Snyder 26" motobike. These would be from transition years Rollfast, Hawthorne, Et.c. they may be the same as used on earlier 28" models--don't know. Thanks in advance .
I was under the impression that the maker changed over the years--as it did for other retailers--but I don't know that. My ideal year is a '35 rugby to replace one that I once had(please let me know of any year you have). It might not be too hard to determine the maker of a 1935--I've seen...
I"m on the hunt for a Rugby motobike. I would love to hear from you if you have either a 26" or 28". Also, please let me know if you have a Shapleigh Wonder as these are often more or less the same as the Rugby bikes. Thank you in advance.
Sorry, Jumpy fingers!!!!Awsome!! In 1973 ish, I nailed myself to a skateboard and didn't step off until '79. In the early days it was about freestyle and Curtis, I recognize every name of your team members
Awsome!! In 1973 ish, I nailed myself to a skateboard and didn't step off until '80. In the early days it was all about freestyle and, Curtis, I recognize every name of your team members.( even non skaters knew Ty's name) Just like the rest of the skating world, I put away the freestyle stuff...
That's the last deck I bought and rode "in the day". Many years later I started riding the bowls around here, so I got my old Sims out and rode it until, one day I snapped it in half. I do like that deck-- there were some similar decks from Sims at the time if I recall. Side note: I still have...
my guess is that he listed once trying to sell the whole thing. When he couldn't sell it, he started trying to sell parts but used his old listing--changed the title but not the old info--lazy.
