    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Thanks! I'm checking these out right now.

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

I tried one of the chainstay mount stands but it's too big for the Jubile's delicate tubing. Got another one that mounts next to the bottom bracket and looks like it will fit fine, but I have to remove the rear wheel first and I didn't feel like doing that yesterday. I might just leave it as...

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Only have one so far. No kickstand (yet) so it's tough to find spots to set the bike where it won't fall while I'm trying to snap it. This is along the Great Allegheny Passage on Pittsburgh's South Side. I really love this bike. Fast, great gear ratio (climbs as well as my 21-speed GT...

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Update: It's fixed. Took out yesterday for a 10-mile shakedown. Terrific bike, fast and smooth. J'adore ce velo!

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Update: New axle and rear bearings installed. Two brand new Panaracer Pasela tires mounted. Might have the old girl back in service this week.

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Well, took the broken axle to the LBS and I'm SOL. He had axles for everything except a sealed-bearing Avocet. Found an NOS hub on the auction site. The axle may or may not fit but if it doesn't, my next step is getting the wheel rebuilt with a different hub anyway. The spacing is correct...

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

The hub is Avocet and it's got a Suntour freewheel. Sealed bearings.

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Man, my luck just is not in with these old bikes. First ride on the Grand Jubile and the rear axle broke. Snapped right at the base of the threads on the drive side. Judging from the looks of the broken end, it was cracked and then it snapped through yesterday. The previous owner wouldn't...

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Sweet! As Blue Oyster Cult once sang, red and black. It's my color scheme. You using 1-1/8-inch Paselas, or 1-1/4 inch? Never mind...was able to read the label from your photo.

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

And, it takes standard pedals after all. Like an idiot, I tried the left pedal in the GT's drive side. Left hand thread, etc...

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

Bought the bike from its original owner. He told me it came with Huret derailleurs originally. Any idea where I can find clipless pedals? It's different thread than my other bike.

    Motobecane Gran Jubile

That's right. "Jubile," not "Jubilee." This is the older model. Vitus 172 frame and fork. Been upgraded to Suntour derailleurs. Wheels are custom made Weinman, brakes upgraded, even the gear ratios are set up for Pittsburgh's hills. So far I've only been able to putter around in the...

Digging in to the '72 Super Sport...

More digging and the bike is completely disassembled. It needs: New wheels, front and rear. Front looks like somebody used the bike on one of Whistler's jump trails. The rear is steel, should be alloy. The cones for the headset are pitted. The freewheel has a ton of slop and sounds like it's...

I've had this '89 GT Talera for nearly 30 years.

Mine is mostly original. The original seat was gone before I bought the bike and I have no idea what happened to the original handlebar. The shifters broke a few years ago and I replaced them with Shimano's cheapest thumb shifters. Might put a set of the old Deore DX thumbshifters on it over...

I've had this '89 GT Talera for nearly 30 years.

Late -80s/early-'90s teal. Pre-triple triangle. Taking it out for a spin tomorrow if it doesn't rain.

I've had this '89 GT Talera for nearly 30 years.

Bought it used for my ex-wife but she never liked it. Tried to give it away several times, it keeps finding its way home. Now, it's my trusty steed. Got it set up with Conti TourRides and some other accessories. Not very fast but comfortable and everything works like new. This pic was taken...

    80's Diamondback Ascent

I had an Ascent, probably an '88 or '89, set up with road tires and drop bars, complete with bar-end shifters. Old mountain bikes make pretty decent city/trail bikes.

I think I made an expensive mistake...

Thanks. I'll try the Paselas if I have any issues with the Contis. Probably would have gone with the Paselas instead of the Contis but the Contis came up half off one day only at one of the online stores.

I think I made an expensive mistake...

The Contis I bought are wire bead. I'll take your suggestion on the Paselas, if the Contis don't hold up. BTW, my first "real" bike was a Schwinn (Panasonic) World Traveler. First night I got it home, over-inflated the tires and they both blew up about an hour later. We were watching TV when...

I think I made an expensive mistake...

You learn something new every day. I've been working on bikes for most of my life and never heard of a hooked rim till today, but apparently I've got them. The "hook" is a subtle ridge on the inside of the rim. My Contis can't be used on the smooth rims made for tubeless tires.

I think I made an expensive mistake...

Bought Continental Gator Hardshell tires for my '72 Super Sport. According to the info on the tire sidewall, these tires are supposed to be used on hooked rims only, something I didn't know when I ordered them. Clearly, the rims on my old Schwinn are not hooked, yet the tire is made for older...

Tried that, bike money ended up being used as bail money.

I had a Brooks saddle on order--it was a B17--but when it was back-ordered until 8/16, then 8/23, then 9/13, I cancelled the order and used the money for a new chain and a Cateye computer. I still want the Brooks, but it'll have to wait until I can sell some stereo gear.

Digging in to the '72 Super Sport...

Found a new alloy replacement, Weinman, at the Schwinnstore complete with freewheel and skewer. Great because the old freewheel sounds like it's full of gravel.

My first post here, and pics of a 1972 Super Sport I picked up over the weekend..

It's a Schwinn seat, but I don't know if it's correct for the Super Sport. The rear wheel is chromed steel Schwinn instead of the proper Weinman alloy, so obviously that's been changed. Don't know about the freewheel. I'll be digging into that next week. It's a SunTour derailleur, for what...

Digging in to the '72 Super Sport...

Oh, boy...I figured it needed paint, cables, cable housings, nicer bar tape... The chain is shot. Stretched beyond any remaining useful life. Got a new chain ready to go on. The bearing cones in the front hub were pitted. I was able to reface the cones by chucking the axle in the drill press...

My first bike looked something like this:

Except there was a name on the tank, and I think it was "Roadmaster." I hated the damned thing. It weighed more than I did and all the other kids, including my younger brother, had kool bike that were in the style of (but were not actually) Schwinn Stingrays. Even my little sister's bike was...

I'm going to get the same type brake pads that I use on my GT (only for the DiaCompe brakes, natch). They even make them in yellow to match the bike.

My first post here, and pics of a 1972 Super Sport I picked up over the weekend..

Out for the first ride, pulled the shift lever for the front derailleur too far. Threw the chain, which jammed. No tools, pushed it back to the car. Yesterday, cleaned and oiled the chain, took it out pedaling around some local roads. Brakes aren't worth a damn, but the bike rides well, and...

My first post here, and pics of a 1972 Super Sport I picked up over the weekend..

I plan to ride this bike, at the very least on some local roads with light traffic or possibly local rails-to-trails which aren't any less smooth than many of our roads. I see a lot of roadbikes on the trails. Looking for better tires. I know how to service the rear hub, too.

My first post here, and pics of a 1972 Super Sport I picked up over the weekend..

It's in pretty good nick, but I had it up on the workstand yesterday and the rear hub is noisy. Sounds like the bearings are running dry. Also, when I put 70 PSI in the tires, the front did this: The tires are Kenda K35s. I'm' going to repaint the chain stays and seat stays, touch up the rest...
