As far as price goes, I just had two Schwinn middleweight frames cold set this past Monday.
Groody Bros. in Topeka charged $25 per frame. I realize prices will vary by region, and even
from shop to shop. Couple shops here in KC weren't interested in doing the job, irregardless
of price, so...
I'm jealous. Went to the Kansas City swap in the West Bottoms yesterday morning. Not anywhere near the number
of vintage items that tinker has kindly shared with us. One table had a few vintage things, with prices higher than what you'd find
on Ebay. Think I was there maybe 15 minutes...
Had to have the Roto-rooter guy come out last summer, tree roots had gotten into the line between the
house and the street, which the home owner is responsible for. He went down in the basement to do the job,
and remarked on some of my bike stuff. Then he made the comment that in the older...
1948 ladies Monark Super Deluxe. Missing the tank and light, of course, but otherwise there, and not at all rusty.
The unfortunate part of the purchase is that the bike has been repainted a not so pleasant color. A facebook marketplace
purchase, so didn't spend much. Two hours there and two...
Nice find, the two-speed manual can be a very pleasant hub to go cruising with. Might have been a left-handers bike. Don't know that I've seen more than one or two with the shifter on the left hand side. The other thing I might add is if you need to swap out the shifter cable, make sure the...
Had a Schwinn middleweight as my paper route bike (the Green Bay Press-Gazette) in the early to mid '70s, and liked how it rode, and how tough it was. Snow six inches deep? Fifteen below zero? That bike took it all in stride. Even when the 10 speed craze came in '74 or so, and I took a...
I've had a couple of Schwinn middleweights adapted to use the Shimano Nexus coaster hubs, to both 3 and 8 speeds, and have been happy with the results.
Believe the truss rods for middleweights and balloon tire bikes are of different lengths. Maybe someone who knows more can chime in. The middleweight rods can be tough to find. Not many models featured them, and I believe they were discontinued on the middleweights in either '61 or '62. All...
Thought provoking idea. Shroud almost looks longer than the head tube, will you have to trim the bottom of the shroud as well?
Good luck on your project, I'll be interested to see it when you're done.
Thanks for sharing, even if it wasn't to your satisfaction. Can't speak for others, but for me personally, I learn quite a bit more when things don't turn out perfectly. I've got a seat to re-cover, but so far haven't taken the plunge. I'm learning a LOT from this thread. Best of luck on...
Don't know alot about the heavyweights, but trying to learn. Trying to figure out when the Phantoms used the 52t sprocket,
and when they used the 46t? Seems I've seen both from roughly the '55 model year and newer. Any hard and fast rules?
Great looking bike by the way.
Thanks for the Chemical Guys suggestions rennfaron, I'd never heard of that brand. Thanks to GT as well. I've seen Protectant 303 locally, had just never tried it. I'm thinking this is going to become a fairly common issue, as most of the desirable middleweights are now over fifty years old...
Yeah GT, that's where I'm at. Lots of "miracle" claims to be found on the internet. I'm just hoping someone's had a good experience with one of the million and one products out there, and would be willing to share. Thanks for chiming in.
Just purchased a mid-60s middleweight Schwinn seat on Ebay.
Anyone care to share their favorite tricks or products to keep the vinyl flexible,
supple, and looking its best? It's going on a rider, if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance.
Believe they will fit. One difference will be the rear fender reflector. A round reflector with one hole drilled in the fender for '69.
By the late '70s, it's a much larger reflector in a black plastic housing, along with two holes drilled in the fender for attachment purposes.
Thanks for the input. I've got an August of '60 frame I'd like to build up correctly one day. I just didn't know what "correctly" was.
Sounds like the lever-action. Wish my frame was as nice as this Jaguar.
Nice bike, and love the radiant blue. Could you share the serial number? I'm trying to learn the approximate switchover date from the lever-action two speed hubs to the kick-back type. May or June of '60 roughly? Anyone know?
Been a Schwinn middleweight guy literally all my life, back to delivering newspapers in the mid-'70s. But after seeing some of the bikes here on the Cabe, I've decided I want to branch out. I'm looking for my first Monark.
Looks fantastic. Hoping to find a Panther in that color. Believe '67 was the only year for the Sky Blue Panther, so it's pretty slim odds. But a man can always hope.
