It was just confirmed that the vintage class will be back in 2025 for this particular event. Next year will probably have 2 distances for the Vintage Class, 16 miles and 30. There is also male and female categories for each distance. Just follow this website later this year for updates on next...
It happened! For those of you who may have seen my previous posts about racing my 1948 Dayton Huffman in the Michigan Gravel Racing Series, this past weekend was the first race to actually include a class for vintage bikes. It was the Dirty 30 Gravel Race in Saranac, MI and the vintage class...
Since it is all new and never been ran before, the rules were pretty slack. I would think that the frame for sure, plus the bike should still have a vintage look and feel to it. As you can see, my original parts are down to the frame, fork, truss rods and stem. Many parts are either new or taken...
Some of you may remember me posting up last year about my 1948 Dayton Huffman gravel racing bike. Well, over the winter, I decided to beef up a couple of things and fix a few parts that had broke from the previous racing season. So here is the next revision (so far). I had a set of 700c...
Edit: info I'm finding says a 1947 based on the serial number. Seat post clamp style resembles post war version as well.
Never fails....any time I come within 10 feet of a vintage bicycle, it seems to follow me home. Hahaha. Headbadge say Fleet Wing, looks like maybe a post-war CWC? All I know...
Vintage Gravel Bike Season Review: The results are in, I finished 9th place out of 29 riders competing in the MGRS Open Mini Class (an all ages class with race distances of 15-23 miles on average). I'm pretty geeked! I set out with one goal, to prove that an old-slow-heavy guy (250 lbs) could...
I agree, but there were a few times where I was rolling 25-30 mph down a loose gravel hill and needed to slow down fast and the coaster brake left a bit to be desired. LOL
For those wondering, this is what the bike looked like when I first found it (after I pulled the weeds out of it and dusted it off quickly). Quite the transformation.
Heck yeah! I'm 55 in December and just starting to push myself a bit more. There are SO many racers/riders I have met this year, both men and women, who are my age or older. Many even up into their 70's. One friend of mine I have met this year is 78 and he finished 6th overall out of 66 riders...
Yes, there is a good possibility that I will do this next year. I had thought about building a different old bike, but me and the Huffman and been through a lot together and I think I will keep tweaking away at her.
Hello! I myself? I am not a racer either. I'm just trying to win by having fun with it all. Obviously I want to improve, but not to the extent of getting too serious about it all. Best of luck with your builds/efforts. It's kinda crazy what these old bikes can put up with.
5th Race Update: So my final gravel bike race of the season went well. The race was fast....a shorter distance (15 miles), flatter with only a few tough hills to climb. Should be easy, right? This was actually my hardest race to date. It is quite hard to get this old girl to fly. BUT, I had my...
5th and final race of the season on Sunday. A few changes I have made before the race:
1. American to English bottom bracket, 3-piece Shimano LX cranks and chainring (from the early '90s). Now I can change gear ratios without having to take my cranks/BB out every time I do.
2. New bottle cages...
1936 Monark SilverKing, rider quality. Aluminum frame with no signs or cracking or damage. Bars, seat post, seat, pedals are reproductions (I believe), has new tires and chain, overall good condition. Personally, I would put a nicer wheel set on it (in the correct 24" size as these are 26") if I...
For Sale: Huffy Radio Bike, 1955, in pretty good shape. Here is what I know about it:
Mostly original. The radio has the internals in the tank, as well as the antenna, but the internals for the battery box are missing. The grips are not original and I question if the chainguard is correct. The...
Quick update:
Rode my 4th race on Sunday. One more to go in September. I've moved up in the series standings. I am now in 12th place out of 31 riders competing. Of course, stopping for a guy standing in front of his house with a cooler and a sign stating "free water" might have added a few...
Thank you so much everyone!!! Love all the replies and the history behind the "Victory Bikes" which I was totally unaware of. The serial number stamped on the bottom bracket is C07896.
Picked up this interesting bike today. It seems to be a Gambles Hiawatha badged lightweight. New departure black hub with coaster brake, skiptooth chain and sprockets, dogbone cranks, stem with the bolt on the top side. No idea what is original and what is not, what year or who made it, but I...
Thanks everyone! Three races down now, and I continue to improve just a little bit :) Averaged 12.9 mph this last race, which was good considering it rained for a hour or so before the start of the race. The salt brine on the dirt then mud covered roads did not treat my bare frame very nicely...
Thank you! It's been a fun adventure so far. Currently setting 17th place out of 28 registered in my series. It'll be interesting to see how I finish in the end. And yes, I feel like a winner no matter what :)
Just wanted to share a project dear to me. It's my 1948 Dayton Huffman. Stripped the frame bare to show off the beautiful brazed joints, slapped a set of 700c rims laced to a Shimano 7-speed IGH on the rear and a Shimano drum brake hub on the front, wrapped in a set of 700x40 cream tires. Other...
Thank you Leon! I will pass this information along to my girlfriend. I'm sure she will enjoy hearing about it.
EDIT: I forwarded it to her and she said "That is so COOL!!!!" Now she wants to find a Pink Witch bike. LOL So is this the Pink Witch (a Triumph made by Raleigh)?
