  1. Threespeedmafia

What years were Indian Scout bikes made?

This head badge was used on an imported British lightweight 3 speed bicycle made in Birmingham, England. It was made by Tube Investments/British Cycle Corporation that owned Norman, Hercules, and Phillips among others. They eventually bought out Raleigh around 1960.

    S5 and S6 (ISO 597) Offerings

This started out so promising and shipping becomes a killer. That tread looks so much better than what I’ve been looking at from Kenda for my Schwinn S6 rims. Are shipping prices up for the holidays perhaps?

    Raleigh and Hercules...Curbside...

Great finds. That "brown" Raleigh paint with a little dish soap and a little rubbing compound to remove the top layer of oxidation will be amazing in the sunlight.
  4. Threespeedmafia

    Autumn colors your bike

October ride on a 70s Raleigh Superbe and a 50s Humber Sports.
  5. Threespeedmafia

    Raleigh Experts Needed!

One year only, 1961 Raleigh Sports and Superbe were available in green or black frame with those white darts. It would have come with normal North Road type bars.

    1937 Raleigh special model

I love it! I mean even Raleigh thought it was special because it says so right on the top tube. Thank you for sharing it with us.

    OG Record Ace...omg

I'll be on the lookout for your right up. Lake Pepin is a long way from Mississippi. If I could only travel upstream on a riverboat...

    OG Record Ace...omg

There is a special feeling when i pull the VCC News & Views out of the mailbox. It is better than the Sears Wish Book...well, at least as good for my old self. And that bicycle is certainly on my bucket list.

    Reduced OBO $245 shipped...30s Hercules

Mine had a similar chain guard that I thought had been added. I removed it when I cleaned it up.

    Humber just in from England

Very cool, Terry! Is it blue or is that just the lighting? It looks very complete and excellent shape for the age. Great find!

    1939 Ladies Hercules

Very nice find. It is going to give you a very upright ride. Nice to see the center of your head badge hasn’t crumbled away like most of these. Here are a couple pics of my mid 30s with a K5 hub.

Looking for info on Brampton 3 speed hubs.

I don't have any experience taking a Brampton hub apart, but I have taken apart two of the Hercules hubs, both B Type, and 1 functions just like my SA AW hubs and one, will not. OK, it does function, but it is certainly not as smooth as my SAs. Nothing appears rough or out of spec, but it just...
  17. Threespeedmafia

Looking for info on Brampton 3 speed hubs.

The way I understand it, these pretty much mirror the Hercules A Type and B Type hubs. As stated, A Type 9 would have been 1949 and B Type 3 would have been 1953. Similarly, you had the Hercumatic and Brampton 3 speed triggers. By the 50s, most of the Birmingham brands had been consolidated...

New Guy/First Post, with a Hercules Rim/Tire Size Question.

Welcome and congrats. As previously stated, pics will help get the ball rolling.

1959 1960 Raleigh Robin Hood Sports 26" Three Speed 3 English Racer Touring Bicycle

Fantastic decals on that beauty! And the mint green pinstripes! And the RIN (Raleigh Industry Nottingham) chainwheel! Nice find! Much better than the later model Robin Hoods which were more budget oriented.
  20. Threespeedmafia

    Hercules Tourist with 24" wheels.

That headbadge and decals put it in the 50s and it would have been produced by BCC, the bicycle division under TI. If it was originally a 3 speed it would have had a Hercules B Type hub which was an SA clone. The headbadge looks pretty good. Enjoy the frame.

    Today's Score - A Classic Rudge

Hard to pass up for that price! Nice find.
  26. Threespeedmafia

    Chain guard, anyone recognize it?

Yeah, I’ve never seen that emblem. Wonder if Fleetwing maybe had an imported 3 speed in the 50s? Of course it could have been and privately branded hardware store also.
  27. Threespeedmafia

    Chain guard, anyone recognize it?

As stated earlier, this guard came on some English made bicycles for the American market in the fifties. More specifically made by Hercules which was under the BCC (British Cycling Corporation owned by Tube Investments). Here are pics of the same guard on my Shelby Traveler with an add pic.
  28. Threespeedmafia

    Dunelt Lightweight

Hercules "royal Prince" Made In Birmingham.

  32. Threespeedmafia

    1939 Sport Tourist

As our British friends would say, she appears in fine fettle, Terry. Congratulations on the acquisition.
  33. Threespeedmafia

What Hubs Have Distinct Sounds ?

Sturmey Archer AW three speed has a distinct tick-tick-tick when coasting. It is very relaxing.
  34. Threespeedmafia

    The Tale of Two Humbers

Sorry, it is a mid fifties. The hub had mud in the oil port and the original trigger shifter was toast. I rebuilt the hub and had a quadrant shifter laying around and my son insisted on using it instead of using a more modern trigger. Even though we zig-zagged the cable, I think it still...

    The Tale of Two Humbers

    Thanks, 3-speeder.
  36. Threespeedmafia

    The Tale of Two Humbers

Nice job! I found a rusty, step-through at a bike co-op in their “sell as is” pile. They rehab and sell many bikes but anything requiring too much work is sold as is. Of course I was enamored with the duplex fork, but when I pulled the door open on the chain case and saw that beautiful chain...

    1965 Moulton 4 speed

All good questions. At this point, I have to find time to do some research. And I need to push some other projects to the finish line. But I assume it will need a complete tear down. Prayers accepted! Thanks for the heads up on the rear fork. I will check it out.

    1965 Moulton 4 speed

Just acquired this one this morning. Lots of work needed. But it is the first Moulton I have ever touched and could not pass it up. Quite the project.
