A friend just sent me these 2 pictures and wanted to know if I was interested in the bike. I don't know enough to recognize it. It looks like it might say "Pilot" on the bottom of the badge but I can't make out what the top word is. Hoping someone might recognize it? Thanks in advance!!
I believe these were from the 30's-40's. Nice tank that should clean up nicely. Very solid with no holes etc. I will also include a set of reproduction adhesive back decals that I got with the tank way back when. The white color seems to be kind of light but I will include them anyway...
Well, I am as old and crusty as my Columbia but I can still manage to crank a little! Not quite to the point of electric power yet. It might be kind of nice though! :)
Thanks! You have a great looking ride yourself! I'd prefer an old kick back hub myself. Eventually! Not real crazy about the cables etc. But I need the low gear not the high. Need all the help I can get for now!
Took an afternoon ride around the neighborhood on the old Columbia. Trying out a 3 speed conversion to help my old tired legs. It's baby steps for me right now but so far so good! Nice to see the sun again.
Well, I sure didn't see any internal "lever" but I can't say I honestly know what/how that little pushrod actually works internally either. Maybe I just need to tear it apart again and study it some more! I am using the thumb shifter that goes with this hub....it all came off of a donor bike...
Thank you! I was aware of not shifting under load but I was not aware of another "lever"! The only lever I saw was the little lever in the bell crank that pushes the pin in. I am assuming this is an internal lever? Must be as I guess that pin has to push on something! Duh! I might have to...
Interesting info! Well, the cones have been messed with as I completely disassembled the hub for cleaning & inspection. I think I got everything back to the same positions as it was prior. Who knows, maybe they were incorrect before I started. (I just measured one side and assembled it back...
Yes, it does have a functioning 1st gear. I can tweak with it so there is no noise in first gear....it will work fine......but then I get clatter in 2nd and third gear. If I adjust so that 2nd and third are smooth and quiet....I get clatter in 1st gear. I just can't seem to find the sweet...
Great story!! Thanks for sharing! Well I just finished stripping the hub down. Cleaned everything and inspected every little part! I could not find one thing wrong with it anywhere! Nothing sticking etc.....and appeared to be well lubed. It is back together again so I will tinker a little...
Thank you very much for the responses. I might tear into the 3CC just for a look. Probably won't spend much time but I am curious... (and stubborn at times :) Sounds like a newer hub would be the way to go. Your reply's weren't exactly what I wanted to hear but kind of what I expected I...
My old legs are having trouble navigating some of the inclines around where I ride so I got a wild hair and laced up an old Shimano 3CC hub I had. I have decided it is time for a low gear! Watched a ton of video instructions & I had the matching cable and thumb shifter so I figured it would be...
Well, I just finished my first attempt at reproducing decals. I didn't have a lot to work with as there was very little left on my existing tank. They are certainly not perfect but I think I came reasonably close...... close enough for me anyway. Still have some tweaking to do. Had to print...
Just picked up this Columbia project yesterday. Trying to date it but not being very successful. The numbers are stamped poorly and difficult to make out. I believe the number is M256536 although the "M" is questionable. This is my first Columbia so I am quite lacking when it comes to...
Tinkering with the Hiawatha after getting it reassembled. The only headlight I had was this one and it was missing the lens. Found a thin plastic Xmas ornament at the dollar store which became my donor lens. Cut it down, masked with thin strips of tape, then lightly sanded between the lines...
Took the Hiawatha for a spin this morning after getting it all back together. The bike did better than I did as it was pretty chilly. It was still a smooth ride!
Thank you so much for the info! I hadn't noticed the difference in the springers! Geez! I was just looking at the rack, tank, chain guard. Thanks for the heads up. I will just wing it from here..... might just leave the Hiawatha badge on it and add some Hiawatha script to the tank. Only you...
Thanks for the reply. I have done a lot of searching and have not found any others with a Hiawatha badge.....so I am not sure they exist! All I have found are the Mercurys. Murray is close but it looks like one difference is in the chain guard. The chromed grooves are on both the top and the...
Just picked this one up a while back. The numbers say it is a 1948 Murray build. It has a Hiawatha badge and this creates some questions for me. I have never seen a Hiawatha with this format. Everything about the bike says Mercury. It is the exact bike that is shown in the 1949 Mercury...
