Getting educated about Schwinn from Marketplace customer.

Ooooff. It was St. Patty’s day yesterday. I’m guessing he overserved himself prior to writing that comment.

The "HOLY GRAIL" of Schwinn MTB frames!

Congrats! It looks like a fun project. The 84 High Sierra would be a good substitute for all the correct parts (if you can find one that's still stock). The biggest differences between the 83 frame set options and the 84 High Sierra is the crankset. The 84 uses the Sugino TAT, but it has 175mm...

    The Gold Standard Schwinn thread

Thanks Eric!... this definitely shows the difference between the two. I have to get mine out of storage and into the light... I think my '62 Superior might actually be Radiant Gold now that I see them side-by-side. Funny how my eyes and mind can play tricks on me.

    The Gold Standard Schwinn thread

Wondering if anyone has a Radiant Gold to stand next to a Terra Cotta (same pic). I know Terra Cotta could be considered more red/orange, but when I see separate pictures of 62/63 Superiors with each color, they start to blend in my mind. Just curious to see how different each color actually is...

    Early 60s Super Sport oddity

I would guess the coppertone SS is a 65 or 66. The 64 still was using the Titan stem stamped "Super" with the bar sleeve stamped "Sport". I do not see that on this set-up. The front derailleur clamp says "Sprint"... that for sure puts it at a 64 or older, but because of the stem/bar, I think...

    Is this Varsity a 68?

I was going to say similar… when I saw the twin stick shifters with no downtube nubs, I said it was a 67. But then I saw “GA” and said “what the h…”, knew it was a 65 frame. Crazy.

What bike did you ride today?

My 1963 Schwinn Varsity turned 60 years old today!… took it for a 10 mile ride.

    Stunning Schwinn Paramount . . a Coppertone Tourist !

Beautiful bike Eric! Is 61/62 the only years they used the Disney “font”? It’s by far and away my favorite script on any Paramount.

1983 Schwinn Super Sport Specs Pedals/Ariake Saddle

I have the 1983 lightweight spec page.... If it’s just an SS, it was supposed to have the “KKT Top Run” pedals. If it’s the SP model, then it was to have the “MKS Esquartz” pedals. BUT, Schwinn is notorious for swapping components if something isn't available at the time the frame was built up...

Scored this super nice 1963 Varsity Sport in nice original radiant red.

Yep, that's the one! If you go to the following Cabe link/post, you will see my 1960 Varsity with the Wittkop. https://thecabe.com/forum/threads/super-schwinn-sunday.185147/post-1536397 At first, I thought it was non-original, as I noted in the post. But after further research and conversations...

Scored this super nice 1963 Varsity Sport in nice original radiant red.

Hi Eric… I just picked up a nice 63 Varsity today (not quite as nice as the one in original post pictures, but pretty good). It was in the same family since originally purchased, and hanging in a basement for a very long time (from the ropes still on the bike in the pic below). I have no reason...

What year is this Super Sport

Though the 1963/64 Sierra’s were low volume and are rare to find, they were electro-forged frames like Varsity and Conti frames. Thus, the Sierra’s used the longer S/N, and not the shorter hand-brazed S/N that was used by the S/S and Superior models. My 1963 Sierra has a S/N of J334647.

    SUPER SCHWINN SUNDAY ****

Here’s my new spring/summer project I purchased on Friday… 1960 Varsity 8-speed (Sept b-date). This is the first 1960 Varsity I’ve seen come up for sale in the Twin Cities area in the last 5 years. Just cannot find many that are pre-64 anymore. The Good: frame is in good shape (normal patina...

Wanted: 1965 only Varsity sport stem. picture is of a 66 stem, 65 would be the same with no markings.

I have the same unmarked hollow-back Pivo stem on my 1966 Varsity. Everything else on the bike is original (except tires/tube/bar-wrap), down to the leather Sprint saddle. So I’d consider the stem the same, but who knows. Were all these Pivo marked, unmarked, and Sprint marked stems considered...

    Lime 1963 Schwinn Sierra

GT, I think you could be right… my bike might have been stamped on that day, but probably was built-up later on. Ugh, massive screwup on the chain ring… I do have Huret. I have had my 66 varsity on my mind, which has the Sprint chain rings. Nevertheless, I still have a mix of mostly 63 parts...

    Lime 1963 Schwinn Sierra

Sounds like a plan. Be careful on the FD clean-up as the chrome on those Huret FD's is very fragile and might flake off. I would not use any type of abrasive material... not even steel wool. Maybe just soapy dawn diswash soap and your fingers.
  18. MN_Schwinn

    Lime 1963 Schwinn Sierra

You have a beautiful Sierra. Great shape and love the lime! Great to see you have the original Lycett saddle too. Your original FD looks like it's in pretty good shape. I have several, and only one looks that good. If I were you, I would not swap it out for the shiny new one. But if you are...

    Schwinn Sprint freewheel removal

I have also removed a freewheel exactly how you describe above. It definitely works and prevents from stripping the 2-prong base. The downfall is, as you described, ball bearings fall out. You are also stuck with the task of re-setting the pawl springs when reassembling the freewheel. It's not...

    Schwinn Sprint freewheel removal

Per the old Schwinn Repair Manuals, you can also try using a #8 easy-out screw extractor. Search the CABE and it will come up in various threads. Also can goggle it to find pictured instruction in the Schwinn manual circa 1970-ish. The extractor works, and it will prevent the pealing of the soft...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Yes, I have gone through those same headaches. I acquired a 63 Schwinn Sierra last winter. It was sitting outside at a farm for at least 20 years, maybe 30, or more. But it had all the original parts (even saddle, which I tried but could not save), so I went all-in on doing a full clean-up. To...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Thanks for the additional info... and thanks for the vintage part spec sheets. Very interesting (all of them). As I continue to tear-down, I’ll give updates when I can.
  23. MN_Schwinn

    JC Higgins 8 speed

I haven’t tried further to remove the freewheel, but I believe I have figured out the manufacturer… Moyne. Manufactured in France. I found a very similar 5-speed on VeloBase, and the same was for same on EBay last night. I read further on this forum about other techniques for freewheel removal…...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

I finally had the time to tear down the bike a little bit more. The below picture shows the source code / SN on the bottom bracket. The source code start with 503, though the 5 and 0 are very faint. It’s the same line-set of code numbers as HyperHal’s bike. My SN appears to be set prior to his...

    JC Higgins 8 speed

I I haven’t figured out the 3-prong vs 4-prong thing either. Per the Schwinn volume 2 service manual, they only discuss the adjustment of the pulley spring and that it should be adjusted give the chain max tension. Nothing regarding the number of prongs one might encounter.

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Thanks for the info! I will remove the rear wheel this week as I’m also interested in freewheel manufacturer… which spins nicely. Both front and rear wheels are a little wobbly, but surprising spin freely.

    1960 Schwinn Continental...with Suicide Shifter

What a beautiful Conti. I’ve been looking for one, and know of a tourist model I can purchase that’s in similar condition, but I‘d prefer the sport model like yours. Enjoy!!!

    JC Higgins 8 speed

Reviving this discussion as I found an old JC Higgins 8-speed over the weekend. This one has fenders, along with the original Austrian made “Assmann” leather saddle. The initial B&W photo appears to have a similar saddle. From checking VeloBase, this was an actual Austrian saddle manufacturer...

    Early 60’s 5-speed Atom 14t-28t Freewheel (2-notch removal)

Looking for an early 1960’s 5-speed Atom freewheel found on the 1962 & 1963 Schwinn Superiors, and the 1963 Schwinn Varsity, Continental, and Sierra. This freewheel had the 2-notch removal system, with a 14-15-18-22-28 tooth count. It would look similar to @GTs58 post...

I most defiantly will keep my eye out for your bike/part sales. Sorry to hear about your friend… hopefully his equipment will find the homes of people who loved bikes as much as he did. Thanks again regarding the hubs. I’m crossing my fingers that he still has them! and if you have any older...
