The numbers are the serial number of the bike. The cover is right there. It's a shroud that covers the backbone that attaches to the fork. The cover is very pitted and most likely won't be legible.

There is a dust shield/ name plate attached to your bike. Right below the handlebars and forward of the front seat attachment , you will find a cover. If you clean it, you should find a stamping with dates and branding of the bike

Your bike is more like 1897, not 1887.
The chain has to have a removable link. The link shown does not appear to be a "master link". Unless, at some point, someone just installed the chain with pins for some reason.

Very good condition. See one tab is missing a small section, but, still solid. Would not be seen once installed.
