Riding once a week ain't cutting it! I got 9 miles in today on the '85 Mongoose ATB. Breezy and a chill in the air here in NJ, but the cherry blossoms are starting to pop. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
It's really looking good! The XO's and the lugged Trek Multi-tracks are some of the most versatile bikes ever made. The XO's are much, much rarer, though. I have a completely stock '91 Trek 750 and a '92 that I bought as a frameset from Jeff Archer at First Flight Bikes. I had the '92 built up...
I'm a local to Reed and @Underground Bicycle Shop. Good to know that such a gem is close by! We might have even crossed paths before - did you know Steve @ Eddy's Cycle City? I lost count how many Saturdays I spent hanging out there. Steve is a treasure trove of knowledge on Schwinns and an...
Found a better photo of the tank in this thread. It's clearly the lawn reflecting in the tank, not green primer.

I found it in the completed auctions and zoomed in on the photos. The aged decals and corrosion in the tank are strong points in favor of it being authentic, as is the fact that it came from a non-collector. I hope it is the real deal. It will make for an interesting discussion. one way or the...
2nd ride on the '82 Stumpjumper - only 8.5 miles on a mild (59F) day here in New Jersey. Facing east in these photos towards Brooklyn. You can just make out the Verrazano Bridge which connects Staten Island to the south with Brooklyn.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!
That is also a good option. I sold an '88 Sierra frame to a friend some years ago, who proceeded to have it built up with a Shimano SLX 10-speed group, and period-correct calipers/ brake levers. It really turned out great and is a blast to ride. The rear triangle had to be spread a few mm to...
Sounds like a great project. I have parts from that era, but nothing NOS. Derailleurs, cranksets, thumbies, calipers and levers turn up NOS on Ebay from time to time. The hardest to find (and priciest) items will likely be NOS period-correct rims. There will be lots of competition for them from...
One Ian's rides last year - amazing photo of the Astoria-Megler bridge!
https://thecabe.com/forum/threads/what-bike-did-you-ride-today.61973/page-2965#post-1614234
Very sad news. I didn't know him but had communicated with him on the "What Bike Did You Ride Today" thread. Always loved his photos of Astoria and the surrounding area. Ian seemed to be very active and full of life. He will be greatly missed.
Pulled one of my '82 Stumpys out for a ride on cold, windy, rainy day, though the sun made an appearance just before it dropped below the horizon. Only 6.2 miles today as I bumped into a friend along the way and spent the next two hours talking instead of riding. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Great score! GT had some great paint schemes and graphics on their early bikes. Definitely looks all original save for the tires. Early Suntour indexing group, which work quite well. I used to have an '89 Timberline - a great rider, but a little on the heavy side.
Very nicely-made frame/fork. It looks very similar to the later '84 High Sierra frame, save for the tig'd vs lugged construction. The headtube angle on this frame looks slacker to my eye, and the chainstays look longer. What are your plans for it?
Seems like riding once per week is the norm these days. The weather was off the charts - 68F today in New Jersey - felt more like May! Got 11 miles in on the '84 Sierra - made a mad dash home when I realize the front tire was going flat. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
1986 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport. I bought this on Ebay over a decade ago from a junk dealer in Gloucester, Massachusetts and spent more to have it packed and shipped by a local bike shop. Originally purchased at the Magnolia Bike Shop in Magnolia, Mass. - spent its entire life in Gloucester...
That Miyata is either an '87 or '88. The Shimano components will have a two digit code that will help narrow it down. Nice bikes!

Good catches @mr.cycleplane. Looks like West Johnson St is now an elevated highway. I found an Al Wickert from Fon du Lac who passed in 2019 at age 81 -the chain guard predates his birth.
If the collector from Redondo Beach is on the CABE, perhaps he or she can shed some light on the bike's...
@Heatwave Nice GT! It looks like mid to later 90's with those decals and the V-brakes I think '95 was the last year for the prominent "GT All Terra" decal on the downtube. Those bikes will go forever.
@soddruntlestuntle That Sierra looks great! Looks much better with the skinwalls. I had one of those some years back and sold it to a friend. The U-brakes are a bit fussy to set up but are very powerful. Just keep an eye on it, because as the pads wear, they strike higher and higher on the...

Also, on the NJ side, Palisades Interstate Park, which runs roughly 10 miles north along the Hudson. Lots of rolling hills, some very steep, but very scenic. I rode there last October, from Ft Lee to State Line Lookout. It's a bit of a challenging ride, 21 miles with 400 ft of elevation...
Nice! I have done numerous rides on this path over the last 20+ years.
Just beware - while e-bikes are banned on this path, it does not entirely stop it, and it creates quite a hazard, especially on heavy traffic days. If the weather is mild, expect the path to be heavily used. Also, at every...
I love the paint job. Very well done! Nice mix of parts too. The fork looks like the Ritchey copy that Bridgestone made in the mid 90's. The Bridestone MB-1 came with this fork, and was lugged, in 1994. This could be a Bridgestone MB-1 that someone built up with 80's parts. The hubs look...
I've lived in the NYC Metro Area my entire life, but being a Jersey guy, I'm not all that familiar with the shops in the City. If you get some milder weather, try riding the Hudson River Greenway. You can take it from the Battery all the way to the northern tip of Manhattan. Here is a shot...
Quick 5 mile ride before dinner on the '84 Sierra. Work and weather has been keeping me from riding. Yes, this area does look like the opening credits of All in the Family! 😁Today was a mild 49F - not bad for mid February in northeast NJ. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Nothing I can add to the tech side of this discussion, but 20+ years ago, my local Schwinn dealer built up a custom bike for a customer using a 70's Continental frameset. He laced Sturmey Archer 3 speed rear/Schwinn Approved France front hubs to 700C hoops. I took it for a spin before the owner...
I enjoyed the CABE newsletter and early website. Richard Truett's tales of finding classics at swap meets, flea markets and garage sales was an inspiration during my early days in the hobby. I wonder what happened to the Aerocycle and '41? Mead Ranger he added to his collection. Is he still in...
