Hey all,
I recently came upon this "Clipper by Columbia" bike at a local bike cooperative. From another volunteer I talked to, it sounded like this one was likely to be junked, although I took a bit of a liking to it. Would this be worth getting as a project? Asking $40. Hubs are good, wrong...
Bicycle of a future that never came to be, it seems...
Such a shame. Makes it more unique, but almost any other recent bike would pale in comparison. The optimism in this design is wonderful to see...
Hey all,
Thought I'd pose the question here, is there a good way to fix the finish on this sprocket? I'm assuming that the best option would be to remove the finish and re-plate with nickel.
Thanks.
Hey Ive,
I've been thinking about just that. I don't know if I'll be able to provide disassembly photos before the weekend, but I've been considering making a video on it if that could help folks out.
The holes for the cone were placed differently on my crankset, being more like notches, so...
Hello,
Thought I'd post this for some common feedback, seeing what others thought. When I got this bike, the headlamp had a polished finish but was fairly tarnished and dirty. In my naivety I tried to clean it up with some 00 steel wool, and ended up marring the polish. Decided to go all the...
Belated update:
I was able to get it off. The trick: an appropriately-sized punch, and just wailing on it. All it took, it seemed.
As to anyone else struggling with their Fauber BB, perseverance is key.
Update:
This hub is, indeed, intended for use with an aftermarket band/drum brake assembly! That resolves the question on that part, I suppose, for anyone with the same question...
Hello,
I'm looking for a headset for a 1970's/1960's JC Higgins-brand bicycle. This model needs the Austrian-standard headset, with an external cup diameter of 30.8 mm. If anyone has one, please let me know.
Thanks.
Thought I'd boot up this old thread again. I just got one of these Coker MC's; story goes that it just got left by a friend of a fella in his storage unit, and had no interest in keeping it. That being said, I was a little confused by some of the features. The seat is obviously aftermarket, made...
Hey Skull,
Wheelmans, and most Coker bicycles, are getting pretty rare, the wheelman especially so. I might suggest, as a more readily-available alternative, to take a look at RBR's mini highwheel; while a little smaller (28" front wheel) the pricepoint isn't bad, and replacement parts are...
When consulting the shimano documentation search, I actually found that changing the language to Japanese or Chinese will actually return a number of results, regarding the installation/adjustment of this hub and the parts list.
From the listing on the polish site, and some context provided by...
I'm not sure, the standard freewheel hub (SG-3S30) uses the S.
I did find this Polish listing of a 3S31, with some kind of aftermarket band/drum brake, although I'm not sure if that's what the particular design is for...
Fair take, I admit. The more I thought about it, the idea that 'bicycle motocross' influenced mountainbiking makes much more sense than if it hadn't. It was what I read on the wiki... 😞
Thank you for making me aware of this! From a glance, it definitely seems like an extension of ordinaries and...
I really like the idea of a family tree, or evolutionary paths. I don't think this is subjective really, as most specific types or designs have specifically lifted features from other preceding designs, although my visuals are likely simplifications. Appreciate all the input and thoughts!
Probably not untrue, but the first commercial mountain bike was designed and produced by Specialized, who mainly focused on road cycling and, therein, the manufacture and design seems to follow road bikes of the time.
Over time, mountain cycling was likely influenced by BMX culture, but its...
Anyone have any good tips on this? I've been looking at some Shimano SG-3S31 hubs on ebay, interested as to if they are meant to marry up with a band brake assembly, but I've had little luck finding information (I've actually had more come up when misspelling the name as SG-3531) and Shimano's...
The path racer!! Thank you for bringing that up, that is absolutely the main ancestor for road biking. Also, thanks for bringing up that point about light roadsters. I'd initially formatted it kind of grouping the full and light roadsters together, and titling the later roadsters 'light.'...
Hey,
Don't know if there's been a comprehensive breakdown of something like this, but I kept thinking about it today, and wanted to put it down.
Since the inception of the safety/upright bike, what would the 'nearest common ancestor' for modern bike design styles? I tried giving it a shot (no...
Here's the culprit in question. I don't have the specific wrench for it; I do have a SPA-1 from Park tool, although I'm not sure if its up to the task. I'm not sure if that would help too much though.
Hey all,
I've been struggling on-and-off with the crankset on my project. I'd at least like to remove it to regrease the bearings, but at this point I'll probably have to replace the retainer for the dustcap. I've tried to use a metal punch with a hammer, and even with that I haven't had any...
Maybe getting a page set up over at the internet archive? It would be great for sharing manuals, ads, media, etc. rather than just posting photos. Might be easier than trying to get the forum set up for something like that.
Kenda, Schwalbe, and Duro tend to be very good brands, at least by my experience. Duro tires tend to be a bit cheaper, but still useable. Ebay is a surprisingly good source for bike tires, but there's bicycleheaven as well.
Brand options and cost usually depend on the tread type, tread design...
Fun fact: ever wonder how China can actually ship overseas for free? Turns out, as the PRC counts as a 'developing country,' shipping from the PRC is subsidized! Under two systems! The United Postal Union AND the USPS. Its a fact that's out there loud and clear.
If this weren't the case, there...
Hey all,
Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but has anyone here used one of SA's rotary-shift hubs? Specifically, do these hubs specifically require the 'rotary hub shifters' offered by SA? It may be a stupid question, but I haven't been able to find a definite difference between the...
I would indeed prefer to keep the original tires, but they are, indeed, not recoverable. It seemed like the bike sat with flat tires for a significant time. Hollandbikeshop stocks similar grey tires, and I may end up going with those depending on the price (plus shipping, of course). Thanks for...
