There are those that are “real”, that is they were designed and or made by cycling enthusiasts, and there are those that are old, but bench made. They are referred to as forge made, usually made by a local blacksmith. The blacksmith made ones are old, many 19th C., but often horribly designed as they were knock offs. I don’t like to trash bench made stuff because that is the spirit of entrepreneurial Americana, but there is a reason why designers went into business and received patents.
