1919 Indian Bicycle

I have a 1919 Indian bicycle that was my wife's grandfather. He rode it to work after he got married. It is in working shape except for tires and in need of paint. My question is how was it painted and were the handlebars chromed. I have been unable to find any pictures of them.

post a picture of the bike it might depend on the bike and the maker that badged it, also the handle bars could have had nickle plate since chrome plating didn't exist till the 30's
