Here’s the as found photos. It was rough, but at $60, it was hard to turn down. Of course, I’ll spend more than it’s worth refreshing it, but I think it deserves a second chance.

I cleaned all of the parts in my new ultrasonic cleaner, then I tried evaporust for the first time on some of the crustier bits. It worked pretty well. I sprayed a protective clear coat over the raw/exposed parts to prevent further rust.

Paint Day 1

The chainguard had been badly sprayed silver a long time ago, and so I primed it with a rust specific primer, and then used a semi-gloss black. I primed and painted the rims a matte red, similar to the accents on the frame.

The rims of course should be chrome, but that would be cost prohibitive.

Paint Day 2

I masked off the center, and then did the same semi-gloss black on the outside edges. That’s gonna need to cure for several days before I lace the wheels.

I have stainless steel double butted spokes, albeit with imperfect nipples.

The rims should complement the clay tires perfectly. The hub appears to have an E2 date code, which jives with the AS 35 stamping on the crankset.

I rebuilt a red set of Torrington 11 pedals, and procured matching grips.

It’s just a generic clay tire I got on eBay. They got pretty squished up in shipping, so it’s going to take some finagling to get them seated squarely.
