Raymond Loewy had a saying; “never leave well enough alone”.
This bike has been owned by a couple of other Cabe members previously and found its way to my place about a month ago. My first venture into prewar bikes. It’s my favorite frame style, in beautiful condition, and simply a cool old Schwinn. Paint is original and gorgeous.
That said.. My other Schwinns are all muts with 7 and 8 speed internal hubs and I’ve gotten spoiled. I thought it’d be nice to have one “all stock” prewar model, but I’m already itching to start swapping out the wheelset and changing things and it’s dawned on me that this bike needs to go to someone that will appreciate it exactly the way it is. If I don’t enjoy riding it, it becomes a display piece, and I’m not into that.
Currently I’m running a different saddle and bars, but the originals are what is included in the sale. I’ve also installed a brand new set of Fat Frank tires, and I’ll also include the repro chain treads.
These pics are from the previous owner’s ad. The bike looks exactly the same. The airplane on the fender is not included. And the Torrington bar stem is cracked, so a prewar Schwinn razor stem is also included.
Crank is date stamped 36. Rear reflector is the rare one that was only used for a couple of years. Leather is coming loose from the back edge of the saddle, but it’s a great candidate to reupholster.
Some of the bearings and cones were scorched. I’ve replaced the bad parts with NOS and will also include some extras.
Locking fork does engage with the key.
The kickstand is loose and bent. I found an exact replacement and it’s included.
$1200 shipped.
Price is firm. If the bike hasn’t sold in 30 days, I’ll withdraw the ad and build it into the rider I want it to be. So, here’s your chance.
