Nice late war civilian bike. Most likely May - June 1945 from the frame date code, which by the way is N5 not L5, and the serial #. Balloon tire bikes started showing up again after many of the industry wide bicycle restrictions were lifted in Sept., 1944. Now the exception to this would have been the Schwinn specialty bicycle the Cycle-truck. During 1943 and 1944 Schwinn was authorized to manufacture 10,000 Cycle-trucks in each of those years.

Bill

Hi Nate, very nice.

The N5 is a May 1945 made frame, and is the latest example I've recorded of this dating system. By bike S/N J48141 Westfield had stopped doing it.

Fantasy, but I can see this as being the type of present a returning GI would buy for his son whom he's not seen for a few years whilst at war....

Best Regards,

Adrian
