5th Race Update: So my final gravel bike race of the season went well. The race was fast....a shorter distance (15 miles), flatter with only a few tough hills to climb. Should be easy, right? This was actually my hardest race to date. It is quite hard to get this old girl to fly. BUT, I had my best finish to date. 4th place in my age group and an average mph of 14.5 (my best before that on this bike was 12.9). So close to a podium yet I don't care. I felt great afterwards. I'll find out later this week how I finished in the series overall. I'll be sure to post updates then :)

Yay! There's still hope for us "mature" riders.

Hi friend. I really admire you for what you've accomplished here. One is naturally going to improve as they persist in an activity, but your progress shows real dedication. I'm not a racer, and truthfully not much of a gravel rider. I attend three organized gravel rides per year, plus some solo. I ride a repurposed '80s MTB, but I've ridden gravel on my cargo bike, and have done a little on some other random old bikes. Having never ridden a purpose-built gravel bike, I tend to think any bike that can fit a tire 30mm or wider can do OK. So for the little bit I do, I can't justify a real gravel bike. You haven't inspired me to compete--that's simply not in my nature. But I've been casually on the lookout for a ballooner frame for a more all-road focused Klunker type bike. I never considered running anything other than 559s, but seeing how nicely the 40x622s fit, the wheels in my head are turning. As if I didn't already have enough things competing for my meager bicycle funds. Anyway, nice bike and admirable effort. Looking forward to seeing more of this.

Hello! I myself? I am not a racer either. I'm just trying to win by having fun with it all. Obviously I want to improve, but not to the extent of getting too serious about it all. Best of luck with your builds/efforts. It's kinda crazy what these old bikes can put up with.

Heck yeah! I'm 55 in December and just starting to push myself a bit more. There are SO many racers/riders I have met this year, both men and women, who are my age or older. Many even up into their 70's. One friend of mine I have met this year is 78 and he finished 6th overall out of 66 riders in his class (1st in his age group). Inspiration for sure!

For those wondering, this is what the bike looked like when I first found it (after I pulled the weeds out of it and dusted it off quickly). Quite the transformation.

From a riding/racing perspective, I can see wanting the drum brake. On the other hand, I think these old bikes don't look so good with a lot of cables. For that reason alone, I think I'd go with the coaster.
I agree, but there were a few times where I was rolling 25-30 mph down a loose gravel hill and needed to slow down fast and the coaster brake left a bit to be desired. LOL
