1948 Schwinn front hub nut and axle

Finally riding a big boys bike
I have a 1948 Schwinn balloon tire straight bar bike. it has a Schwinn script front axle but the nuts will not fit on my 1952 D12. They look metric and I think they are 15 mm across flats and have an 8 mm by 1 pitch. Is this actually BSF thread and if so, what size? it is not SAE as 5/16 nuts are normally not 15 mm across flats and 8 mm metric nuts should only be 13 mm across flats.
This is really odd and what started it is i am looking for the right nuts to fit on this 52 I bought. The 5/16 nuts that are 1/2" across flats with 5/16-24 threads look too small to me.

I also see some 5/16" - 26 Schwinn front axle nuts on ebay and they are cheap enough I ordered ia couple.

Odd that on bikes only a few years apart would have different axle threads.
