I have a red '60s columbia with the same problem

The formula for the red had gold in it. For whatever reason, UV light would fade the red from the paint and leave the gold. It wasn't really a two stage paint job. The blues and the greens didn't fade, just the red; opalescent red to be exact.

Actually that's not 100% correct. All the colorant faded away. What's left was the not so clear base paint that was tinted Red, Blue, Green and early Violet. The base paint may even have been formulated with linseed oil.
