Yes, they were an extra thick tire with a different tread pattern.

I can't find a picture of them, but I guess you could say they were more similar to the Tornado tire, but with a wider section in the middle with a faint "cheater" pattern like the Fastback slick, but still rounded like the Breeze or Sports Touring tire. I have one at home I can probably get pictures of later.

noticed the 26x1 3/8 Southwest Service tire for $1.50 more than the standard one. Never heard of that. Is it a thorn resistant tire for desert use or something like that?

Those tires most likely have an extra ply or two like a truck tire.

26x1-3/4" Southwest Service(a "Second" tire with all of the Schwinn markings buffed off) on the left and a 24x1-3/4" Schwinn Straightside Tornado whitewall on the right.

I found a handful of 26x1-3/4" Tornado seconds too...all dated last quarter of 56, except for one last quarter of 57... even one that was double stamped. Gotta look at it cross eyed to read the dots! Lol
