If you are staying true, a 1960 serial numbered frame would not have been built as an American. The production periods are well documented and the American was not produced after the 58 model year and was absent for 2.5 years. Production started again mid year 1961.

I would hate to challenge his recollection. But I will pry perhaps to see if he has some original documentation. I sure would like to know what it was for certain.

Maybe ringing his bell would make him happy. Paint, decals, and all the parts are part of the clues as to what it was. The Panther had tank hangers welded under the top tube so those would identify a Panther.
