I live for the CABE
For your consideration is a reconditioned 1968 Schwinn 5 Speed Stingray Fastback in original Coppertone paint. MC43195 date codes the bicycle to December 1967. However, the saddle type indicates it is an early catalog year 1968.
The chainguard emblem and fork darts had been wiped off by a previous owner so I replaced them with Schwinn Approved waterslide decals. When working on the chainguard I was able to see a ghostmark of a Ram's Horn emblem. The handlebars and stem are date coded 1968 so it looks like there was a handlebar swap at some point, I suspect when the bike was sold but who knows. I used a Stingray decal for the chainguard so it would match the style of the existing handlebars. This new waterslide decal can be easily removed if not desired.
The bike is original except for the following new parts:
It has a new repop saddle, white seat brace caps, brake cables and housing, rear inner tube and both rim strips, and the chainguard and fork dart decals are newly installed Schwinn Approved waterslides from Dan @bicyclebones. The original saddle will come with the bicycle so it can be reupholstered if desired - there is no rear reflector included but the seat pan and tab are solid.
The bicycle was stripped to the frame and all bearing groups were cleaned and regreased. The frame and fork drop outs were properly aligned. All metal parts were cleaned of any grime or corrosion. The wheels were relaced and properly tensioned. All chrome was cleaned with citric acid and brass hand brushes and polished. There is some speckle in the chrome but as you can see it still shows very nice. There is a small dent in the front fender as shown.
The paint was cleaned and waxed, all metal surfaces were cleaned and oiled as appropriate. All bearings were cleaned and regreased and all of the bearing race surfaces are fine with no pitting or scoring. All threads throughout are intact with nothing stripped and most of the tool flats are nice and sharp with a few showing some marks from previous mechanical work. Some of the parts have lost their chrome like the kickstand and seat binder bolt. Please examine the photographs and ask any questions before bidding.
The pedal spindles are straight and pedals spin nice and quiet, the dust caps have no dents. The chain was thoroughly cleaned and oiled and is in excellent shape with the bluing intact. All the bolts throughout are original and correct including the Q bolts on the seat brace.
The grips have are nice and bright with no tears. The bicycle has never been wrecked and the frame and fork are free of any dents or bends or big scrapes. The frame was string tested and there are no issues with the alignment of the rear triangle.
The bicycle shifts fine but the shifter overload tube spring does not compress. The rims are nice and true with no dents and all of the Torrington butted spokes and nipples are original.
I did the work on this bike and with 30 accumulated years of bicycle shop experience there are no hidden problems or surprises and you can buy with confidence. If you need extra info or pictures feel free to reach out.
Local pickup in central NC is preferred - I can meet the buyer somewhere along the interstate corridor from Raleigh to Charlotte for delivery. If for some reason it had to be shipped we can discuss freight and boxing charges based on your location.
