1971 Collegiate pair

I was just gifted these 1971 Collegiate Schwinns. They have the wrong gear changer and derailers, (put the thumb click ones on in 1991) and other than that I think are original.

With original owners manuals and 1971 catalog.

Very nice! I’ve noticed a fatal flaw with the stem mounted Stick Shift setup that came on these bikes. And that is whenever I’m out of the saddle in a low gear, my right thigh is likely to bump the lever up into a higher gear. At the least convenient time, because if I’m out of the saddle to go fast, I’m already in fourth or fifth. I’ve had it happen pulling a 100lb trailer uphill, with cars behind me in an intersection. And especially if turning left.

All that to say that they shifters retrofitted to these bikes could be viewed as a good thing. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to change them.
