Took it for a 5 mile ride today, and I really enjoyed it!

But...I still need to adjust to get 2nd gear, and the brakes need a good cleaning. They heard me a block away when braking hard. 😬

I don’t know what the shelflife is on a caliber brake pad, but on all my 60s bikes I gave up salvaging them. After sanding them and cleaning them up, they’re still worthless so I replace them if I plan on riding the bike.
 
If they're the later, John Bull sized, inserts, Kool Stop makes a replacement pad. If they're the earlier, narrow Raleigh Industries pad, I've not seen a direct replacement for the pad. I don't recall exactly when the pads went from the narrow RI type over to the wider John Bull size block. I'd guess some time in the mid or late 1960s.
