Look Ma, No Hands!
This is a UK-market-only 1979 Raleigh Superbe frameset - with fenders - in Raleigh's 23" frame size.
Though Raleigh branded these as Superbes, this is not a cable-brake bike - it's a rod-brake frameset, but based around the Sports geometry and made for 26x1-3/8" wheels. For those of you familiar with 1950's Raleigh models, it's closer to a Raleigh Dawn than a Superbe.
These were, in a way, factory reissues of the 1948-1955 Raleigh Superbe Sports Tourist, in classic Superbe Green (though a bit lighter and glossier than the 1950's models), but based around the revised Sports frame of the late-1970's. These were never offered in the US, and this one - so I'm told - was bought from a UK embassy diplomat in the middle east, then eventually shipped to the US with the new owner's belongings.
This particular example is presentable, but it has its challenges. The fenders are dead rough, though the fork presents well and the paint on the frame isn't bad. However, there's quite a bit of under-paint surface rust on the left chainstay and the left seatstay has three very unfortunate divots in it from someone who absolutely ground an aftermarket generator onto this thing. Very curious, given that these were fitted with Sturmey AG Dynothrees from factory. The frame also has some paint splatter around the bottom which will need to be wet sanded off - there was more, but I already wet sanded part of the frame already.
As a post-1977 bike, this has the larger 10mm rear dropouts, not the earlier 8mm to accommodate slotted Sturmey-Archer (or 8mm round coaster brake) hubs only.
I'm also including the bits from the rod brake system - some shiny, others a bit rusty - and the original bottom bracket and headset parts to this bike (minus lamp bracket) to aid in reassembling it. Pics of that soon; I have it off the bike right now and didn't have time to photograph it this evening.
I'm parting with this frameset only as I was recently able to acquire a mint men's and ladies' pair of these and no longer wish to fart around with this one. Note that this one has the Pletscher rear brake bridge and later kickstand mount; my other '79s are earlier and have the tubular bridges both top and bottom.
Located in Miami, Florida.
