Lamont

Finally riding a big boys bike
Just picked up today ..... haven't cleaned it yet.

Yup, that's a 24" rear wheel .

Wasn't looking for a Mtb , but seemed to me The Edge is a pretty unique bike

Decided to save it from falling into the wrong hands. ( spoken like the Cat lady on adopting the her 34th stray )

Found some great info and backstory on Mombat Cycles website.

Apparently , it was a special edition, not a exactly a one year wonder.... but pretty close.

The author on that site describes an anecdote from John Olsen on how the ad pic came to be.

Nice components Suntour 900 hubs, to Araya RM-25 , Suntour rollers, Deore shifting / DR's, Sakai FX cranks ,Taiwan gusseted frame.

Very cool bike!

I didnt know there were mountain bikes back then with different size wheels like today, Mullet bikes.

Come to think if it ..... a lot of strange stuff happening in the 80s is bound to come back ...

Oh man I had one of those when they were new! Fun bike and just to stuff that thing hard on the Tiger Mountain trials outside of Seattle. I had a buddy buy one to tour China - oh to be young!

You're only as young as (your knees) feel !

I missed the classic MTB days .... I think I was riding a Kawasaki dirt bike along abandoned railroad beds and occasionally trying to outrun the pumpkin field farmer shooting saltpeter shotgun rounds at us for cutting across his field.

Hoping to find a good home for this bike.

Looks like a December—January bike with the “L” serial number stamp, for the 12th month of 1986, but seen in the 1987 catalog.

So , during this period ,

(ie Raleigh USA era , on the eve of the derby cycle acquisition , before the USA Kent Wa factory )

I read elsewhere that "M" in format 6 L M 0057 denoted the Factory location , and that the remaining digits were assigned sequentially for the production run , however long a run lasted ......

if this is true , then presumably, this frame may have been the 57th made of the first year, the edge was offered.

however,
L for the Month / fornight seems indisputable

but M for Malaysia, with the frame labeled made in Taiwan , I suppose it just was a convenient bucket to within the fit within the serial number logic / code system in place at the time . But would be curious to know.
