Having a bike where two people are in control simultaneously with shifting and braking is a bike nobody will ride with two people onboard. So they never get used and just sit in the garage.

I believe there are 3 different spoke hole sizes for the red band hub. 60-64 HD Wasp, HD American or tandem would have this. HD wasn't its own bike back then.
The hubs came in .080" standard spoke holes. Or .105" or .120" heavy duty spoke holes. The rims were just drilled out for what ever size nipple you were using.

Lots of beach cruiser type tandems had two speed kick backs.

For a kick around (not a serious road tandem) they worked well. 90% of all tandems sold just sat in garages never ridden.

I have a Blue Band "overdrive" automatic in my Mini Twinn, and it makes the bike more practical to ride any distance.
