Wore out three sets of tires already!
The Grape Krate is the best of the 2020 Schwinn Krates. It's in a lovely metallic purple, with spring forks and a Sturmey Archer drum brake. The rims are aluminum, so they won't rust like many of the chrome plated ones.

The last three on eBay, all bone stock, have averaged $945, with shipping.

I'm offering this one for a limited time at a significantly reduced price because I am a bit overextended at the moment.
  • Metallic purple seat cover, with the correct "S" stripe, to match the original, not yet installed. Note: Factory seat cover has been removed. In removing the rivets for the tag, one of the holes was significantly overdrilled, but it will not show and will work with a decent washer.
  • NOS silver Schwinn streamers
  • Teardrop mirror with purple reflector
  • Transparent purple dice valve caps
It’s in absolutely new condition - never ridden - just one tiny dent in the fender from shipping, and the removal of the seat cover in preparation for the new one, as noted above.

Super cool colors!
Thanks!
It looks really great in person, and I have to imagine how amazing it would look riding around, out in the sun.

That's one of the big things that Schwinn does not note in the ad copy, and I think is worth noting: Orange Krate gets a metallic seat but plain paint, Grape Krate gets metallic paint but plain seat.

My feeling: It's a lot easier to install a metallic seat than to repaint a bike in a metallic color.

too bad they did not price them at a range where regular people would buy one for a kid to ride.
That's fair.

The $125 Wal-Mart Stingray is worth considering, if you can find one, for a kid.

I think that at the $500 that this bike originally sold for, one definitely gets $500 of bike. Spring fork with drum brake, banana seat with shock absorbers - these things are expensive parts. So are the (closely) matched Stingray rear Slik and front tires.

For what it's worth, the $77 that a coaster Krate cost in 1970, adjusted for inflation, is a bit more than $500 today.

You are absolutely right about it being more expensive than the majority of kid bikes - I certainly wouldn't buy one for mine - but it also is about shifting priorities. We are choosing to buy other things for our kids than bicycles today - and that is totally legitimate.

For everyone following this thread: This bike is for sale in the present state, with a few upgrades that are on the way, for $700 - $250 less than price that the last three bone stock examples have gone for. I've decided that this makes more sense than trying to do massive upgrades.
