Finally riding a big boys bike
A 21.1 stem is noticeably too small for this 1963 Varsity. My 65' Collegiate also can handle a 22.2 stem. When and why did this change occur. All my 1970's Schwinn use the 21.1 size

A Wald shim (#901?) might be used to tighten the fit.

The wider 22mm stem fits into a wider steerer tube, which is lighter weight than a thicker steerer tube with the same outside diameter and a narrower 21mm inside diameter. That’s the normal development of bicycles — much about how to make them lighter weight; (or the vice-versa cheaper?).
