Finally riding a big boys bike

I have been trying to figure out a value, without an appraisal, for my 29 Westfield GJ-1.

Just need to have a record of it for my insurance.

I know it has been painted over, at least 7 times that I can tell so far, trying to get the layers off of it, only to discover the og paint was sanded before re-painting. The saddle was recovered (I wish the guy I got it from and left the cracked up skirted troxel alone), oh well.

Also, he replaced the wood rims, with modern clinchers, because he didn't trust the rims, and he threw them away. yay.

Anyway, it is what it is. With all of that in mind, I know what my 1940's and 50's bikes are worth, as I have an excellent handle on that. However, 1929, not so much.

I was hoping that you all could kind of give me an idea, so I can have it, if you would. I appreciate any help from you all.

No, the bike isn't for sale, it is from the year my Mom was born, so I am kind of attached to it. Yes, I do plan to try to get it as original as possible, but that will take time and money, as you all know.

Thanks in advance. Here are a ton of photos of it.

Nice, I need a skeletonized head badge like that one. Not sure about the code language (gj-1), but I believe that Westfield called their 28” bike the “junior roadster” until 1932, then the “drop bar” and in 1934 the “camel back”. The 26”-short & skinny was called “juvenile”.

the GJ-1 was Westfield's model number, got that info from Mr. Columbia.

Yes it is the juvenile model, and as I have told others, the kids in 1929 must have been pretty tall, the top bar is 31" standover. :)

good luck on the head badge hunt, this is the only one I have ever seen like it.

I have seen the badges on a computer.

The value of a bike not for sale - that is one tough question.
Say then, what if you wished to have two of them, but might have only 1 presently; (e.g., as a buyer).
The 1st link (20s) had an estimate of $200-250, but was for a double drop bar frame, (neither junior nor juvenile).
If one were patient, maybe for less, but if one is not really buying, that might mean a lot of patience to spare.
