i'm thinking it will clean up nice, but I'm really concerned about to rubbing off the white detail work... I know it gets chalky over time

Chalky. Ever seen a 40+ year old bike that sat in the Arizona sun all it's life? I've picked up a few here locally and the decals and guard screening looked like you could just blow on them and they would disappear in a puff of dust. On the guards I just clean them the best I can staying away from the screening. Then I clean around the screening very gently with rubbing alcohol and cotton balls like your cleaning an open wound. Then I can shoot a couple light coats of clear lacquer on the outside of the guard to save the screening.

^Ditto. I use Qtips when cleaning around decal. And emphasis on LIGHT coats as it will also dissolve the chalky decal if it's applied too heavily before it's sealed. FYI I have a nice rack, PM if interested.

thanks all! pulled the rack and speedo for now... replaced the front rim strip and shot some air in the tires, it took me around the block no problem. will take your advice on some GENTLE cleanup... this will make a good winter project.
