'71 Raleigh Carlton Super Course

Finally riding a big boys bike
Good afternoon! I recently came across this Raleigh. Zero experience with these bikes. Interwebs tells me the Super Course is lowest tier with alum rims. Kinda backhanded compliment. I removed frame pump for pics. I am chomping at the bit to get those gawdawful plastic fenders off. Here is how I bought her.

Nice! That was lavished with a lot of love! Huret derailleurs replaced with I believe suntour in back campy shifters/front derailleur. TA 5 pin cyclotourist crankset upgrade from nervar steel cottered crank. Original bar tape, hoods, cable housing; clean and leave these in place only oiling inside of cable housing and if necessary replacing cables. If those fenders are not cracked I may be interested if you have no use for them. Saddle is original too. Sagging a bit but not dry rotted; rejuvenate with proofhide not just any leather conditioner. Maybe consider lacing it and tightening it up a bit ( others can advise). Obviously regrease everything. You need special 23mm TA puller for crank; use a standard puller and you will strip threads. Reynolds 531 straight gage main tubes. These are universally loved for versatility and nice ride . Enjoy and take pictures for us. By the way, I used to have a ‘71 SC ; it was all original except tires and pedals; hopefully this link works; https://thecabe.com/forum/threads/71-raleigh-super-course.134064/

Thanks for the kind words. You are correct, rear derailleur is a Suntour Vista V GT. Seat post/clamp is also Campy, along with frame pump.
Here's my plan:
Totally disassemble.
Total cleaning, careful not to damage orig paint. Polish/wax.
New grease/ball bearings everywhere.
Ditch : front/rear racks, fenders, generator/light, kickstand, rear side-pull brake(need correct one & frame cable screw)
New: tires/tubes, brake pads, chain, cables, seat tube/fork/chrome tip decals, toe clip straps

Purchase price was $125.

Stay tuned for update and progress pics

Here is a 73 I bought gawd years ago. Still looks just like this. I think these frame lugs were only for a year. I liked it for being green and having a Brooks B17. It has Simplex derailleurs. CL seller was surprised he got no responses but he didn't realize he had it in bike parts category. I paid $100. I cleaned up the water bottle holder and sold it for $30. You might be in the same situation with the fenders.

Those fenders are quite desirable, BTW. Don't throw them out.
It looks to me like a prior owner set it up for "'70's style" touring.
It has an alloy TA triple chain wheel. NICE!
It makes me think of a Dawes Galaxy.
I concur, 70s touring. I'm trying to date the upgrades. It couldnt have been much after purchase. Tires were original Raleigh. Upon further discovery, MORE CAMPY!

Wheelset is another headscratcher.

According to interwebs, they are early 60s.
Stay tuned...

FWIW the Campag hubs carry a date marking

it is located on the inner face of the axle locknuts

it will not mean much in this case since we know the hubs to be non-original to the cycle

the wheel rims are FIAMME Red Label for tubular tyres

although the present tyres are marked Raleigh they could not be original to the cycle as it came from the factory wearing 27" wired-ons

So, progress is halted. Appears to be 18 tooth bottom bracket, but I cant find such a tool for removal. Little help?? Thanx in advance fellow enthusiasts!

Looks like a Shimano cartridge bottom bracket.
The tool should be readily available
If you're only going to use it once or twice, probably better to just take it to your local bike store.
On the other hand, since they are sealed anyway, may be no need to remove it.
